I hope that you don't mind me chiming in. But, I love African-American women. However, I have never closed the door on any other race. I've dating women from all over the world, and each just brings a little bit of their culture to the table.

Okay, Okay!!!! I just love women in general.

Preferences can and do change. Believe it or not before I came to Korea, I was not the least bit attracted to Asian women. I had friends who would talk about that I was going to be around so many beautiful Asian women and I couldn't fathom what they were talking about. I found Asians to be incredibly unattractive. Then once arriving in Korea, my preferences changed drastically within 6 months or so. It was such a drastic change in fact, that I now think Asian women are maybe the most attractive women. Strange how that works.

Does it matter to you how they wear their hair? I kind of dislike Michelle Obama's type of straightened hair - black hair straightened so much that it is way straighter than the typical straight hair of white women. I do not like that. I like multiple braids, loose curls, afro, and any number of ways African-American or African African women wear their hair, EXCEPT for extreme straightening. What is sad to me that Michelle Obama clearly does it to the elder daughter already. On this picture you can see it. It is not clear what exactly is done to the younger daughter's hair.

So that I do not like at all. I do not like how it looks, I find imagining how it feels to the touch repulsive (after so many chemicals have been applied, the hair looks kind of spiky, as opposed to smooth and silky), but moreover, I simply do not like the idea that Black women have to modify their natural hair so drastically to fit in.

I cannot say how Michelle Obama's (or her daughter's hair for that matter) looks or feels because I do not know them. However, I am an African American woman and I wear my hair in the relaxed style I believe that you are describing. While it is true that harsh chemicals can have a negative effect on the health of one's hair, this can be avoided by using a conditioner to keep it moisturized. My hair is soft to the touch, but I am only one person. I happen to like Michelle's hair. I would hope that Michelle Obama did not choose her hairstyle based on trying to fit in, but it certainly is possible. I did not choose to relax my hair for that reason, but I do enjoy changing my hairstyle every so often.

I am afraid that she might have chose the hairstyle to fit in, because I happen to know of women lawyers among African American women who do exactly that - they believe that it improves the chances of winning interviews, climbing the ladder, etc.

That is great that you like it and are able to have your hair well conditioned and soft.

If you ever want to change the hairstyle by going more with accentuating than hiding curliness, look up the book called "curly girl", a line of hair care products called "deva curl" (available on drugstore.com in large pump bottles so it is not quite as expensive per ounce as regular bottles), and the new york salon Salon | Devachan Salon (not to go there, but just to learn of the trend).
