First of all, I'm a guy with no life. I have dysthymia, social anxiety and avoidance personality disorder. I've been like this for 40 years which is why I'm a 56 (soon to be 57) year-old virgin. I'm sure this must sound impossible to some people. Well, it's not. I've never had a girlfriend either, so you can imagine the frustration that is my life. Ironically, I'm more comfortable talking casually to women than I am with men. That is, when I'm able to talk to women at all. I know some women don't mind if a guy is a virgin but I've gotten the impression that they're in the minority. Especially someone my age. Not looking for advice, just wanted to get this off of my chest. Anyone else in a similar, middle-aged situation?

I'm not a virgin, but I'm middle-aged and have had far less sex than I anticipated in my youth. In my thirties it looked like my sex life was going to have some regularity after all, but then I hit a major draught, so I know a person can go years and years in unelected celibacy without being in solitary confinement in a jail. Women tend to think there's something wrong with celibate men so there's a snowball effect the longer it lasts.

Do you think there are reasons other than your social. Anxiety at play here?

There are more middle-aged virgins out there than you might think. Some by choice, others less by choice. I know a woman who's about 40 years old who still hasn't found the right guy so she's celibe ... cele ... a virgin. No bigs.
I do think KoKo2 is right to an extent that some women (not all) think there must be something wrong with someone to be a virgin after the age of 12. But we all know there isn't, that's just shallow women judging someone. |

People are shallow though, much as they like to say otherwise.

Oh, I know there's more than anxiety. Life long low self-esteem and self confidence. I don't know if things like this are hereditary (I doubt it) but my mother (who is now 90 and has dementia) has had low self-esteem her entire life.
