How long can genital herpes remain dormant. Is it possible that it can remain dormant for 5 years or longer?

Hi there! I don't think there is an exact amount of time. I've done a lot of reading about it and talked to my doctor when I was diagnosed and she said I could've had it for years, but with no symptoms.

@OP: Do you mean to first appear or to reoccur?

It can remain dormant for a very long time & then reappear. Or stay dormant. You'll always carry it even when it's dormant

I have a couple friends diagnosed with it and have never had any breakouts. Also have a friend who was diagnosed 20 years ago when she had a breakout, but has not had one since.
