Hello All,

First of all, sorry for the details provided as they are very personal and embarrassing.

I have often used masturbation to cope with hardships and difficulties in my life from a young age. Really didn't know what it was at first.

As I grow up, discovered it and felt guilty based on my religious upbringing. Kept it private from my family but I am certain they knew (know) about it as a few walked in on my a few times when I was young.

My wife has been supportive over the years, but I still have problems.

Recently, discovered the a prostate massager, and it has only made it worse. It now distracts me all the time unless, physically active, even then it is in the back of my mind.

Visited a medical doctor a few days ago to look over some issue with my body (pain, discomfort, etc) caused from it. Ironically, caused by a single use. She did not see any harm to me.

Looking for a followup with another medical doctor soon.

My wonder is, should I seek metal health treatment? If so, which one should I seek - therapist, psychologist, etc.... Hoping they can prescribe something, in addition to one-one or group therapy, to help control or eliminate the impulses urges to do it as it is now more prevalent from using the massager.

Any suggestions are helpful.

I see this is your first post here on PC, Want2CalmDown. So... welcome to PsychCentral! Here are links to some articles, from PsychCentral's archives, that discuss compulsive masturbation. I believe you may find at least some of the answers to your questions in these articles:

Is Masturbation Bad for You?

The Top 10 Myths Behind Masturbation

How Much Masturbation is Too Much?

Also... as you can probably imagine... this topic has come up before on PC. Here's a link to an old forum post written by a female PC member who had concerns related to this subject. I include it here mainly because some of the members who replied offered links to what they considered to be some helpful websites:

Masturbation addiction

I hope you find PC to be of benefit.

Hello Skeezks,

Thanks for your response and the helpful information.

My main concern is addressing the feelings and sensations that have arisen from using the massager, and looking for professional guidance to assist in recovering from it and dealing with it.

I don't recommend using the massager for any reason. You have a wife. She's better enough and perhaps talk to a sex therapist. Maybe they can help you understand why you shouldn't be worried about your own personal feelings. Doesn't mean you should be attached to it. Remember love comes first before sex. So pick your wife first because she give you comfort than a freaking toy. If you're single that's a different story. Good Luck. You don't have to take my advice but I hope you recover from this issue. Having guilt is not a healthy feeling.

Masturbation is natural and beneficial, whether you're single or in a relationship. Many people do it regularly. It's only a problem if it's interfering with your life (e.g. you have no time to do anything else because you're masturbating 10 times a day, you masturbate in public/risky situations, you completely avoid sex with your lover to masturbate instead, etc.)

I guess I'm not sure what the problem is. You have pain from masturbating a lot? (tip: use lube and be gentle) Or it's causing a problem in your marriage?

If it's not causing problems in the bedroom, go ahead and spank that monkey. I don't do it that often, but it sure puts the brakes on anxiety sometimes.
Thanks for this!
