I am a 52-year old male and I have had problems sleeping for most of my adult life. I took Ambien for many years and it helped but the effects wore off after awhile so I stopped taking it. I am now taking Temazepam as well as a few natural supplements that were recommended to me by an acupuncturist: 5-HTP, Melatonin and Theanine.

My problem is that I wake up early. Last night I woke up extra early (around 330am) and couldn't fall back asleep so I feel like a mess today. I increased my dosage of melatonin from 2g to 4g two nights ago. It helped the first night but last night was one of the worst night's sleep I have had in a long time. My "dream" is to be able to get a deep, sound sleep on a consistent basis, something I'm afraid I have not been able to accomplish in a long, long time.

Does anyone know of any natural supplements that have worked for you on a consistent basis?

I'm not sure how effective it would be for you, but I've taken Valerian Root before to aid in sleeping. You could possibly try that.

Melatonin, available at health shops is known as a natural sleep aid

Crying isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign of having tried too hard to be strong for too long.

5HTP has been working for me. I take it with Valarian to calm my nerves.

I would go to the doctor's and have a physical. Your age (I'm 59) is when I started having some of my sleep problems. There could be other things going on like thyroid issues and no amount of sleep aids will necessarily help.

Do you go to be the same time each night? Do you do the same routines? I wake in the middle of the night to pee and sometimes have trouble going back to sleep but do eventually. I'm retired though so can get up if I don't get back to sleep and then take a nap or something later.
