I know I am grinding my teeth in my sleep becuase my jaws get so sore my ears hurt and my jaws sometimes crack.I have dreams that I am pushing so hard on my teeth they start coming loose. The feeling is so real when I wake up in the morning I check to make sure my teeth really arent loose.
Thanks for this!

Eat something crunchy or chewy before bed (bagel or apple, that sort of thing). Teeth grinding can be kind of like the brain twiddling its thumbs with your teeth being the thumbs. Wear out your jaw with chewing and it won't need/want to be so restless. What's got you being so stressed?

My dentist made me a mouth guard but it was expensive and then the next time I had dental work it didn't fit anymore since my mouth had changed. I didn't like it either, having something big/bulky in my mouth when I'm trying to sleep; made relaxing even less likely :-)

Now that I think of it; I'd try chewing a wad of gum some time during the day a little ways before sleep.

Thats why I have been grinding my teeth so much here lately. I am trying to cut my obsessive gum chewing habit, and have cut out the eating late at nite thing so that makes sense. I`ll try the apple thing though. Yeah mym mom had a mouth guarde made and she says she hates it too. Stressed! Ha that`s just me always anxious. But especially here lately with school, job and relationship problems. I`ll give that a try though thanks.

You might be grinding your teeth because something might be stressing you. That's why I do it. That and also some anxiety problems. Tried taking anti-anxiety meds but it only made it worse. :/ I also do tend to have bad dreams when something is bothering me or stressing me.

I would revisit the eat late at night problem; when one eats doesn't matter; the food gets processed exactly the same, the body doesn't care. What helps me too, is understanding that I like to eat a little every 4-6 hours or so and that 8 hour nighttime, doesn't do it! But maybe do some raw veggies/carrots too if you are going to try the apple? Last night I had about half a cucumber and that helped me get to sleep; maybe a salad with crunchy stuff would help as well as an apple.

If I wake at night and am a bit hungry or out of sorts (which happens lots now that I'm getting older) I'll go eat a banana or slice of toast or something comforting like that (yogurt works well for me too), something that I can "add" to my breakfast food calorie count the next morning (sometimes I eat a bowl of cereal w/fruit (banana or raisins) as the milk/calcium & magnesium help me get back to sleep and sleep well).

I had to make my bf go to the dentist. I was saying for weeks that he was grinding his teeth in his sleep and he didn't believe me. So he goes to the dentist and the first thing she says is "oh....you grind your teeth in your sleep".

Luckily he had a nice, molded mouth guard from when he played hockey and that has essentially stopped any pain he had. He also uses those cheap $5 ones from wal-mart sometimes. They don't last nearly as long but they do the job.

I don't know of anything you can do before bed to prevent it....never been a teeth grinder, myself.
Thanks for this!

I do this sometimes, in waves. When it starts it lasts for weeks, and when it stops, it stops for months, even years. When I notice it, I go to the Walmart or Walgreens and buy these disposable rubber mouth guards and put them in when I start grinding, and before I go to bed. They're $10 and totally worth the price.

They're called "Plackers Grind-No-More" Dental Night Protector Advanced Protection Against Night Time Teeth Grinding. Contains 14 Disposable Units. Individually Packaged And Ready To Use. No Boiling, Cutting, Or Moulding Required.

Grinding my teeth while I sleep is a side affect of one of the medications I take. You're right, it is really hard on your teeth and jaws. If you can stand it, you can get a mouth insert to wear when you sleep. I've seen them sold at drugstores but you can probably get a custom one made through your dentist.

I have been grinding my teeth lately too. I wake up and my jaw is sore. I know I have been doing it because of stress and anxiety. mouth guards do work! relax, relax is what I have been telling myself.

Grinding your teeth in your sleep (or clenching your jaw) is usually a good indication of stress or anxiety -- a good way to fix it is to get a mouthguard to prevent your teeth from being worn down, otherwise you can develop TMJ and that's a lot worse to deal with.
