hey i have insomnia and havent had a gd nites sleep for 3 years. I have been put on antidepressants, last week i was able to sleep bt still felt really down, so my doctor kept me on the same meds but upped the dosage. And now i cant sleep again, is it possible that its the meds even though they are the same i was on before?

Increasing a doseage or starting a medication can have some effect on your sleep. When I started cymbalta my sleep was all over the place. Ask your MD about the time that you take your medication. I know that when I was on wellbutrin I was first taking it in the AM, but switched to bedtime and that worked a bit better.

I' a little confused about your doctor trying antidepressants because you are an insomniac, unless you also really suffer from depression as well. Antidepressants can oftentimes 'overstimulate' your mind and keep it too alert to drift into REM sleep. I also agree with Regretful in that meds can affect your sleep patterns, and all kinds of other pleasant and unpleasant side effects. The first two weeks of being on Celexa was the worst insomnia I've ever had. I was tired but I just laid in bed and sleep never came. I called my doc and they had me switch the time of day I took it. Within two days I was back to sleeping, but with some very vivid strange and disturbing dreams. And eventually, my sleeping got back to normal. Small adjustments can make a world of difference. Always tell your doctor if something is really bothering you or not working for you and try to describe what you feel as detailed as you can. It may trigger a new direction from your doc. Good luck.

Any emotional instability can cause insomnia. And any change in your brain chemical levels can cause changes in your sleep, too.

If increasing the dosage is causing you heightened activity levels along with insomnia is a sign of mania, which would mean you need to be on a mood stabilizer as well as antidepressants. Might be something to ask your dr about.

some people get insomnia from depression, so its not unusual to be prescribed them

When were you put on the antidepressants; if you were only on them a week or two and your doctor then upped them, that could be too soon or maybe there is a "schedule" of when to up them to get to a good level; I would definitely talk to your doctor and tell him your sleep experiences too. Here's a good article about depression and sleep:

Be sure to tell your doc about any herbals that you are taking. They can interact with some of the Rx meds.
