I have this dream about stairs and I've had it at least 20 times. Sometimes it's the same staircase, but other times it's other staircases within the same building of my high school (I graduated in 2013 but I still often revisit my high school in my dreams).

Basically what happens is there's a rush of students going up the stairs – sometimes it's a steep incline and sometimes it's not – and I follow and begin to go up the stairs. I'm uneasy from the start but as I continue to approach the top of the staircase the uneasiness progresses to a crippling fear. So I go very slowly, and eventually I'm either the last one still on the steps or one of the last (sometimes there are people with me with the same struggle of getting up the steps). Eventually as I reach the last few steps, I'm physically unable to move. I look up and there are always people rooting for me, waiting for me to just climb the last few steps. I finally attempt to finish going up the steps and I always fall. I don't trip; I straight up fall backward, HARD, and land at the bottom of the steps. By this time, everyone else who was still on the stairs with me has succeeded and I'm still at the bottom of the steps. I'm all alone. I keep trying, and I keep falling down. This usually continues 2 or 3 times until I wake up.

I think the most obvious interpretation here would be the fear of academic failure, but does anyone else have any ideas?

Welcome to Psych Central. Dreams can often reveal much about our inner workings and can help guide us through life. For me finding out what my dreams mean is often a solitary process.

Here are articles at Psych Central that help understand dreams

This dream may relate to a situation in real life, where you are feeling left behind. You feel like your are falling down in life, as others pass you by. You feel that you are unable to move.

Fantasea...Going by similar dreams that I've had, it sounds like there is at least one thing that you are uncertain of, specifically something you are afraid to face or afraid may happen and you are not at peace with the possible outcomes of it/them. If possible, I put extra effort into the real problems I have that the negativity may represent. The stairs, the falling, (not so much the other people in the dream), represent, they are cloaking, disguising something. I don't think anyone yet knows why the subconscious uses these "symbols". Regardless, if you resolve the real life uncertainties possbily represented, the dreams should stop.
