I work only four days of the week, but I work for 10 hours straight each of those four days. And my work schedule is 7pm to 5:30 in the morning. It's a good schedule for me, sort of, because I like being awake at night, but it's getting to be quite a lot. I'm so tired all the time now. It borders on exhaustion and I just don't get the kind of sleep that I need. I try to make up for the lack in quality with quantity, but that doesn't work in the case of sleep, it seems. Quantity will never outweigh quality. And I need quality sleep, then. Because on my work nights/days, when it's time for me to sleep, I never really get much in way of quantity, but the quality of my sleep is still low as well. I've tried a lot of things. I have a sleep spray that used to help, but now it just makes my eyes tired and not the rest of me. I used to take sleeping aids but I stopped that a while ago for...personal reasons. I don't know what to do. I try to completely exhaust myself to make it easier to sleep and that doesn't do anything in terms of making my sleep any good. I don't dream any more, either. It's just nothingness when I do eventually fall asleep.
And I have to leave for work soon. I have to stop at the store before going there because I need to pick up some things for lunch/dinner and I have to get a new wrist brace because mine went mysteriously missing... Anyway, if any one has any suggestions, they would be very much appreciated. I will check in here (on PC in general) when I get home from work. I'm trying to set a routine for myself...and I'm making this place a part of my routine.

Hello FightingTheStorm: You know... I've read that working nights is just plain unhealthy no matter what. I don't know as there is much of anything one can do to change that. Many years ago, I worked straight nights. And, like you, I enjoyed it. I've always been kind-of a night person. But, at the time I was still in my early 20's. So I had stamina.
My only thoughts, with regard to this, would be to try to block out as much light & sound as possible & do the things that are typically recommended with regard to sleeping in general... exercise (I know you said you try to exhaust yourself prior to going to bed), avoid caffeine, stay off the computer or the smart-phone prior to going to bed... I'm sure you know the drill... Beyond that perhaps finding a day job might be the best solution... or, if you have the resources, looking to the possibility of being seen at a sleep clinic. You wrote that you don't dream. However I recall having read, somewhere, that everyone dreams. So if a person thinks they don't, it's because they're not remembering their dreams. My best wishes to you... ![]() |
