If you have done a sleep study in the hospital, what was it like?

Both of mine were horrible. Both times I wound up leaving early. I couldn't sleep the first time because of all the wires I was hooked up to. Just could not find a comfortable position and I felt weirded out knowing there were people watching me trying to sleep. At around 4am when I still hadn't fallen asleep I just called it quits and left.
The second one they gave me an ambien. With the ambien I managed to sleep a whopping two hours before I popped awake and could not go back to sleep. I could tell the staff was frustrated and I was frustrated so I said screw it and at 5 am when I still hadn't gotten back to sleep I said screw it and left. Hopefully you have a much better experience __________________ I think I need help 'cause I'm drowning in myself. It's sinking in, I can't pretend that I ain't been through hell. Thanks, Raindrop. What you've described is exactly what I'm concerned about. I cannot stay asleep for more than 3 hours at a stretch...which seems to me to be indicative itself of a sleep disorder. But I'll be annoyed of I show up only to be sent home in a few hours. Oh, well...guess I'll just hope for the best.
Oh - and it freaks me, too, about people watching me sleep. I mean, who could be comfortable with that?! __________________ |

Yeah that’s exactly what I’m worried about when I do mine in a couple weeks. I’ve had real bad partial insomnia lately. I’ve been up since 11:30 tonight. I’m just worried the sleep study will be a waste of time and money. And since I don’t have a secondary insurance and am just on Medicare I can’t afford to do another one let alone one that just gets screwed up.

I had one done but it was in a dedicated sleep center not a hospital. I do not know if it would be a different experience or not?

I had mine last night. Yes the wires and thing in your nose are terribly uncomfortable. I only got about 5 hours of sleep and was sent home at 7AM and I was scheduled to do the second part of the study. I was up several times during the night. I did have a few episodes while sleeping though and I was told my doctor got what she needed.

at mine, in a dedicated sleep center, they told me to bring the medications i usually took at night. they "glue" tons of wires to your scalp, and monitors to your chest and everywhere.. you sleep normally for a while and they monitor out of the room via machines you are hooked to and video. then they wake you up if you are having episodes of apnea and try different masks. they tried the little nose mask on me first but i knew strait away it would be pointless cause im a mouth breather and i ended up with a cpap and a full face mask. i stopped breathing 17 times withing an hour of monitoring. pretty severe they said. if you do end up with a machine it takes a little while to adjust but then its not so bad and you actually wake up refreshed for once. major difference in quality of sleep.

I got my results an hour ago and I might have a heart condition instead. That’s kind of scaring me right now. I have to see my primary now and go for an EKG. I only got about 2 hours of sleep though so no wonder I slept all day and all night yesterday.

I don't know. The place I'm supposed to go in my town is some sort of nationally recognized special loopy-doopy sleep clinic thingy or something like that. It's next to a hospital, but not actually part of the hospital. What was the experience like for you? __________________ |

Thank you for the details. It's really helpful. I have postponed my sleep study because I am in physical therapy for an achilles tendon injury and I just don't feel like going through more discomfort right now. Plus, none of the literature they sent explained much of anything to me - your post really does. __________________ |

Yeah I did and I’m still trying to figure things out with both my sleep and primary doctors who are not being very helpful. But I see my sleep doctor again next Thursday so I’m wondering if she’ll have me do another study.

Oh dear gawd .....
You are covered in wires literally head to toe also I had this weird basket thing over my mouth.. it’s was awful. Took almost 30 mins to get all the gear on. Then they are like “ Ok it’s time to sleep now “ I’m like wha??? It’s like 7pm ! At the time my usually bed time was about 10 .. Ok so your laying on a hospital bed ( yeah they suck, no comfortable position to be found) wired up to the max and ... you need to per .. they come in and unplug the main wires it’s such an ordeal, at this point my scalp is itching from the goo that they had to use to attach leads to my head. So you get back in bed and I tossed and turned for hours, few more trip to the bathroom .. (okay sleep study lady stop acting annoyed your paid by the hour ) Eventually I fell asleep for almost 4 hours and I said I’m done , I’ve had enough. My results were .. restless legs , no deep rem sleep. __________________ Helping others gets me out of my own head ~ |

So I took the plunge and did the sleep study last night. The tech was anything but friendly...a seriously zero personality man. Besides him, things went smoothly and surprisingly well. I watched a video about the purpose of a sleep study while he hooked me up to what seemed to be 1,000 electrodes with 2,000 mile-long wires attached. Fortunately, I had no burning or itching from the pasty-gluey stuff.
Peeing was, frankly, my biggest concern. I kept thinking what if it's one of those nights when I have to get up and pee three times? This guy is going to be sooo annoyed. When I got into the bed it was rock-hard. The tech handed a remote-looking device to me and told me it was a sleep number bed. So I made the bed softer, thinking Why would someone buy a bed they have to make softer or harder...why not just buy the kind of bed you prefer in the first place? The room was completely dark (by my choice; I could have had a night light). I had a difficult time falling asleep; after about 20 minutes I started thinking I wouldn't be able to follow through with the study. Next thing I knew I awoke. My first thought was Uh-oh. I'm totally wide awake and it's the middle of the night. What am I going to do if I can't fall back to sleep? Well, first I have to pee. So I buzzed the tech. He came in and said, "I'm going to remove your wires. You can go home, it's 6:00." I actually slept from 11 to 6! Weird. I sure was glad to leave and come home, though. Turned out that the most difficult aspect of the sleep study was finding the clinic. The directions/diagram in the brochure was absurdly off. Luckily, I had left home early. The only other part of the whole deal that I found mildly irritating was the plastic thing in my nose. I've always thought I wanted a septum ring...uh, nope. Maybe not. Anyway, I won't get my results until January 14th. __________________ |
