My cat just passed away from lung cancer recently and he keeps coming back to me as a black cat in dreams (he was a tuxedo cat). One time he fought with my mother's cat. One time he was curled up sleeping under my night stand (I haven't owned a night stand the whole time I was his guardian) and he transformed from a tuxedo cat to a black cat. then he didn't want me to pet him and I didn't feel like his guardian anymore.
