I suffer from PTSD. I’ve had chronic nightmares since I was about six years old. They used to be water dreams where the water would rise to the point where I couldn’t get out of wherever I was at. I would drowned. I still have those dreams sometimes, but now the water most of the time recedes and I can get out of the situation. Now these dreams have changed over the last several weeks to where I am stuck in a house with the floor caving in and people surround me. I’m not able to get out and it’s very scary. Sometimes they try to cause me harm sometimes they try to cause other people around me harm but it’s getting to the point where I don’t even want to sleep anymore. I realize the pattern that for at least the last 10 years during this time of year I have more and more of these nightmares and more and more insomnia and it’s really difficult to work through. What helps you with your insomnia? What helps you battle reoccurring dreams?
Thank you for your feedback…Wish I didn’t dream. |

Dear Purplegoat83,
I am so sorry you are in that unhappy situation. Since I struggle with persistent nightmares and insomnia I can totally identify with you. PTSD is so brutal and messes up so many part of life. Wish I knew what to say that would help. People not afflicted with nightmares and insomnia can never really understand how awful they are. I sure hope you find something that helps you and me too. So sorry I could not be helpful. My heart goes out to you! Sincerely yours, Yao Wen |

I have had rejection dreams and one of them was last night in which a person blatantly told me in a threatening manner that I couldn't sit here. Then shortly after, I dreamed I was with some female friends testing makeup and seeing that my makeup was actually better than this girl's makeup.

I just had a dream that I was in a classroom and was listening to the teacher giving a lecture about math formulas , and I felt rather bored out of my mind. It sure was better than the dream I had the other night.

I’m very sorry you’re having such a horrible time when it comes to sleeping, Purplegoat83. I’m not sure if you’d find anything in this link helpful but it does specifically focus on PTSD nightmares and offers some potential solutions:

Recurring dreams can be dealt with ok-ish if you can learn to lucid dream. You gain enough control to do things like keep your head out of the water just in time or have the wave end up much smaller or weaker than it should be. It's not perfect but the control allows you to slowly gain the ability to move on. I don't know how to instruct you on it. I learned as a child out of self-preservation. I know that I keep a sense of consciousness to do it. I am aware and thinking while dreaming. I manipulate the dream in the same manner as when you're imagining a scenario while awake but it does take a lot of mental effort. Hopefully you find something better than this but it's an option to pursue if you don't.

I hope the day will come when I will quit having dreams. I don't want them anymore. Like it goes to show you, sometimes there's little hope to be given through dreams.

My dreams have shown my rather bleak future. It goes to show you the hopelessness you might feel. Dreams are often bad news and if you're lucky, good news on the horizon.
