For a very long time I've experienced nightmares from which I wake up screaming from. These have been put down to happening because of my Complex PTSD. During times of 'crisis', (severe depression) such as I'm going through now) they are more intense. The nightmares have recurrent themes, which I will discuss with my psychologist. The sleep terrors result in me sitting up in bed and screaming, I've found the best way to deal with them is grounding techniques, such as splashing cold water on my face, observing 5 things I can see, 4 things I can hear etc, and repeating aloud 'It's just a dream, it's just a dream '. But it's gotten to the point where I dread going to sleep because I know what's going to happen. Does anyone have any experience with sleep terrors and know any ways to deal with them upon awakening? I'm struggling with them. Thanks in advance 😊

Hi Astro, it sounds like the nightmarews and night terrors are seriously disrupting your life. While you're working with you cptsd in therapy, there are medications that could help with nightmares and night terrors. Have you ever tried a med?

Yes, very sorry to hear that you're going through such awful night experiences AstroSpectrum, but it's good to see you've utilised some coping techniques and taking a proactive stance, yes.

For a long time I used to have regular sleep paralysis/night terror episodes but I'm lucky because they've all but vanished as I've attacked the leading causes, similar to yours.

There is one thing I'd like to suggest AstroSpectrum which is to maintain a warm or cool body temperature as you sleep. I have a foot or both feet sticking out from my bed covers which act as a kind of thermostat.😁Because I discovered over time that if in my sleep my body temp became high, hot, it would trigger an almost certainty of having a night terror: I don't know why that is but it is possible it stems back to when I was a baby.

Anyway, so try that AstroSpectrum, and yes continue talking with your psychologist. Good on you.👍

Hi *Beth* 🙂 Yes, I'm on meds. They're to treat my psychiatric illnesses are currently in remission, just keeping them in check. Though I've never taken any meds for the nightmares, I didn't know that there were any! Thanks for letting me know

For me, the nightmares & night terrors eased up the further into the healing process I got.

I do still have them from time to time, but nowhere near as bad as when I first started out.

A gentle hug for you if okay ... Recovery is hard work!
