Beware of this medication if you have PTSD

One of my docs put me on tramadol(Generic for Ultram.) to help w/pain management&it has some really nasty side effects-the worst of which is VERY VIVID NIGHTMARES. I have PTSD&some abuse issues from childhood&for the past 2 weeks I've been waking up around 5-6am huffing&puffing&taking several minutes to realize I'm no longer in the dream. These dreams include: sight, sound, physical sensation...I also usually find all of my covers ripped off of the bed after one of these doozies.

i also havebeen diagnosed with PTSD and DD.
I have been off and on Tramadol for pain for over 2 years and never associated my severe nightmares and sleep disturbance to theat medication
thanks i will need to talk to the psychiatrist about this as she has been trying all different meds to trey and help me sleep and to settle the severe and i mean severe nightmares

I tried ultram and never associateded it with nightmares. If you ever need to talk I am on disability too, and get really, really bored. I have ptsd, and osteoarthritis, along with something effecting my muscles, and making it so I can't write, or walk sometimes. So if you ever want to chat I am usaully here in the evening.

Hi. i can't take ultram due to my allergy of asprin. But my mom in law takes it and it raises her blood pressure up so high her face gets really red. But she already has hbp and cholesterol. My sis'ter gets it for her back pain and one of the side affests was raised bp and nevousness. Mabye that's why it's affecting your dream. I know if i take vicodin before bed I have the worst awful nightmares. Same goes for tylenoyl pm.

YIPES!! Thanks for the heads up! When I started taking anti depressants, I had some bad nightmares for a while. one time I accidently elbowed my wife in her eye when I was asleep...REALLY HARD

She says I'm still an extremely restless sleeper & move & moan a lot

I take tramadol..because some doctors wanted to put me on a morphine patch with percocet..I tried it and it made me feel like a zombie...so I take the tramadol now..I was in a bad car accident which left me with chronic back and neck pain..I am sorry for your bad reaction to it..It has really helped me to function better.

Did somebody say Vicodin can give you nightmares if you have PSTD? I just fell down some stairs and had to up my V. intake and have been having hellish nightmares (about my lost kid) which I attributed to Mother's Day coming and two death anniversaries. I met someone here in chat who's been kind enough to stay up and talk martial arts (I used to teach) with me for hours on end and then I don't have the nightmares. But I'm honestly at a point of being afraid of sleep because of the dreams.
Anybody else been there?
I also take ambien for sleep. What a joke! Might as well take baby asprin. ( I was abused a lot, my kid started beating me up when she was 12, so I guess I'm a hard case.)

I just want to add that Effexor treatment AND withdrawal caused me to have the most horrific vivid dreams that recurred as soon as I shut my eyes again. And nobody could hear me screaming. Effexor is evil. Especially to someone with PTSD. It should be outlawed as far as I'm concerned.
