My god! It’s so important to have self-confidence. It means so much. The only opportunity you have to explore the world. Inside and outside you.

I know it because I have been suffering a big part of my life feeling a noone. Full of fears. Hidden on my own.

I’m aware of lots of people feeling the same way I’ve been feeling.

In an ideal world, the caretakers provide the needed security for a kid grows psychologically healthy through providing him the security, caring and confidence enough to allow his development as a sane individual. But, when this doesn’t happen it’s like a Russian roulette.
It will depend on his temperament, his experiences and his abilities to discover what HE IS in the world he’s called to live in.

It’s not easy at all. You grew with the belief that you weren’t a complete person. You never felt affection. You never felt listened. You weren’t treat as a person.
How to undone all this?

Only YOU, you, who is reading this post can do it. At your pace and when you feel ready. Psychiatrist and psychologists can help. I will never deny their important role. Because they play an important role. And they say all the time what I’m saying here. In the end you are the protagonist. Be patience with you. It’s not easy at all. There will be more defeats than victories. It doesn’t mind. You are a complete person. You deserve the world. If nobody told you. I tell you now. And I cried it out loud.
There’s noone better to care of you and love you than you, yourself.

And for those who are not ready to care and respect their kids as they deserve, please, don’t have children. It’s not needed. Believe me.

In my personal case, I can say that after dealing with depression and social anxiety, I got to find myself. At about two months ago. I’m 49. But, I felt such as relief. Never felt like that before. I have to say that a big part of all of my path to recovering is due to a person I knew online. His wise advices.
The thing is that there’s always an opportunity to learn from each person you cross pass and friends, people on these boards, etc, are important. You never know what you are gonna learn from others experiences.
Open you up.

I hear you. I’m a GenX as well and feel like I’m just now understanding who I am, what’s essential to me, following my last psychotic episode. Can relate to growing up neglected by my divorced parents. Had to be my own parent b/c I never really felt safe. Sounds like you are figuring things out. Finding meaning takes as long as it takes.

I’m glad you also found yourself. Kind of relief, isn’t it?

What you pointed out about surroundings factors to explain posible effects on a certain generation is very interesting. It’s a very interesting sociological research. Of course, you have to take into account which population you are considering but nowadays, this need is diminishing since the world has a tendency to be more homogeneous for obvious reasons.
