I saw this quote on a poster 6 years ago and it has haunted me ever since. My parents told me (not regularly but quite a few times) that I was dumb and wind up a loser. I tried to prove them wrong but I failed. I tried really hard. I think the quote would be more accurate to say life is tougher when you are stupid and ugly.

You are being quite unkind to yourself.

Life is tough. But it's tougher when you believe lies like that.
I know how you feel. I'm sorry you feel that way. I want you to know that I believe that lie about myself sometimes too. But I know it's a lie. Your parents lied to you. Other people will do it too you also. Don't do it to yourself. ![]() |

Timeforsleep,
I think Thine self untrue is right. Quote:
Its a lot easier to negate things about yourself instead of take compliments. I know from experience. You cant let people walk on you, making you believe they're correct. Everyone makes mistakes, its part of life, but that doesnt make anyone stupid/ugly/unlikealbe/etc. Be proud of who you are, there is no one in the world exactly like you. You are a unique, beautiful, loveable person. See the good in you, believe the good in you. ![]() |

There's a flaw in your argument :-) If you were "stupid" you wouldn't be able to appreciate the argument; you wouldn't be able to understand the difference between how tough life is naturally and how much tougher it would be if you were stupid because you'd be too stupid! LOL
What someone else says is just what they see from their vantage point and is about them and their view. Another person cannot tell you much about your true self because they are not you. Besides which, no one can predict the future; your parents cannot have known what particular problems you would have. Besides, who guaranteed you would be a "success" and who is defining what that success is? The going after what you truly want in life is all there is. That and becoming who you "are" through the experiences you have pursuing the tasks that you decide to take on are what make up our lives. You don't have to prove yourself to anyone; you "are". That's all there is. Thinking badly about yourself doesn't help but can hurt your efforts; but even that is just a weight on your feet, it's not your feet themselves! They're "normal" perfectly good feet for timeforsleep's use. No one can give or take that away.

Since you started this post with a quote. I would like to add a quote from Buddha who really described the essence of self esteem in a few powerful words.
"You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection." Buddha I hope this helps you feel better about yourself. Michelle |
