I just decided to start smiling at myself when I see myself in a mirror :-) It's a quick, momentary thing and I think it will be like seeing a friend or acquaintance suddenly when you weren't expecting to. I think my brain will get so use to looking at me and smiling before I realize "Oh, it's just me" that I'll feel better inside about myself (not that I feel "bad" now :-)

Great idea, Perna! I hope this helps your self-esteem to get better. I might give your idea a try as well.

Fabulous! I like people being pro-active in helping themselves, this is a very creative idea (I do sometimes like to pull silly faces when I catch myself in the mirror)

My first response since joining-I felt unable to until I read this wonderful tip. I usually avoid mirrors and try not to see myself, will smile at myself and think of others doing this. Wont feel quite so alone. Thanks.

This is a very good thread.

I'm used to focusing on what makes me feel bad instead of why I can feel feel good. Smiling does help it puts you in a better mood instantly.

Another thing you can do is put together an accomplishment list. Simple things that just pop into your mind and don't worry if it isn't a HUGE accomplishment. Examples:

-Painted Bedroom
-Found a good doctor
-Learned how to make a new meal
Thanks for this!

I love this! I was missing a thread like this where we can list our daily successes!! Thanks for this!

I totally agree with Amy that my brain is very focused on all the things I do wrong, and it's very helpful to make a conscious effort to list some of the things I do right! I'd love it if we could use this thread for that purpose! (well, not for all the things I do right!! But for each of us to list our accomplishments on a particular day!)

Today I am going out with friends for brunch. This is an accomplishment because I have postponed this several times. I have some big anxiety issues as well as depression, and my tendency is to withdraw and avoid. Today I am coming out of my shell!!
