I begin volunteering next week at a local hospital. I will be working in a mental health office and moderating support groups. This is a big step for me. I haven't worked since I last got sick in 1985. I want to volunteer for many reasons. Some are: I want to give back something to this hospital which has been good to me and my family. Secondly I'm doing it as a test to see if I may eventually be able to work full time again and get paid. Thirdly it has already helped my self esteem greatly. I'm really feeling good about myself for a change.

Wish me luck!

Excellent!

Realize that you won't be "perfect" in this.... give yourself time, not just for learning the actual methods they want you to follow, rules etc, but also for your own mental processes and social skills etc... don't be hard on yourself. Keep track of the good stuff. I'm Volunteering

Hello everyone.
I worked my first shift Wed. Besides doing what I mentioned in my first post I did two mother/newborn discharges and delivered patients mail(greeting cards). The only problem I've had is recovering physically. I walked for almost 4 hours and I'm really out of condition. Back and legs are sore. Hopefully I can get into shape.
Also the other volunteers were great people.

Thanks for the well wishes and support.
Dennis

I always contemplate volunteering, but talk myself out it. Too many "what ifs" get me nowhere.

Congrats to you!

There's a really great site; Volunteer Match: http://www.volunteermatch.org/ which even has online/cyber volunteering jobs. I've found in-person and online volunteering through them.

That is great, Dennis, that you're liking your new hospital work and getting some needed exercise :-) I hope your muscles get use to all the waking soon!

I volunteer in the women's jail co-leading a support group with a therapist (she does have on-going training for me in once-a-month meetings & has become a good friend).

It is very rewarding & sometimes scary. But, you know, there by the grace of God... Most are drug addicts who then got involved in prostitution & then numerous parole violations would end up with the book being thrown at them.,
