I googled myself because an abuser manages to keep finding me. turns out all my information is out there. every bit. and it terrifies me. there are connections to this user name all over the place (stupid I know). I need to disappear, and I don't know how. this is not good. I can't wipe everything that is already there... how do you erase yourself?

You can start by e-mailing the site administrators with requests to take down your information. If you can't find the site admin's e-mail address, try the "contact us" e-mail address or any text at the bottom of a page that says "This site is run by…" If I think of anything else, I'll post again… Good luck!

Would that work for those "pay for this person's info" sites? I was able to change my user name here, but I have no idea how to get through all the sites that have my info...

The "pay for info" sites can only access public records. It's hard to get those hidden. If you own a house or get a traffic ticket, then you can be found by a person with your basic info and a lot of motivation. There are some counties that will allow your name to be removed from online databases if you're a victim of stalking or domestic abuse, but the information would still be available at the actual recorder's office or court house. Same with records of lawsuits or inheritances.
If the person is really scary, it might be worth it to go through the effort. Some loser was online stalking me for a while too. Among other thing, they managed to break into my retirement account and sold all my stocks. They tried to withdraw the money, but couldn't get that far. I really have no idea how they pulled it off. Ever since then, I take security measures whenever I'm online. I don't reuse screen names, I don't reveal my IP address, and I suspect all my friends of being the stalker. Sorry, just the way it is nowadayz. They probably suspect me of stalking them too, lol! |

I'm not sure. Is there a law school near you? If there is, I'd see if they have a free consultation centre and consult someone there. I'm sure there are privacy violations happening if the pay-for-info site has your information. They might also be able to tell you how to draft a take-down letter to the site. Good luck!

Can you consult some cyber security experts? Try asking this in some sort of tech forum on how to make your private information private. This is not the right forum for solution.
Would getting a new phone number and email ID (which only you and people really important in your life know about) help? See if any information is leaking from FB....security experts are surprised how much information leaks from FB. Sorry....me and internet are like Paris Hilton and NASA space shuttle. But please ask this in some sort of tech forum, mebbe Q in Yahoo Answers, you'd get better answers. good luck! |
