...may break my bones, but words can never hurt me." How many people with childhood emotional abuse issues agree with this cliche/Quote? I don't believe it to be true at all. I would rather have been hit with sticks and stones. They hurt far less and broken bones heal faster.

abuse is abuse is abuse

pain is pain is pain

sure there are differences from the TYPES of abuse we all are recovering from but the after effects of abuse are very similar in many ways

words, sticks and stones all hurt. they all take time to heal from.

I couldn't concur more strongly w/ you.

I can only speak for myslef, but I have had physical injuries throughout my life & I can forget the feeling of a physical injury, but in no way can I forget the feelings of emotional & mental trauma. They will, unfortunately, stay w/ me forever...imo, you don't ever quite heal totally from that. It's not like there's a set for emotional bones that the doctor can give you.

It's just too much.

I agree. Pain is pain.

I used to hear this from the person who did both.

It might be a good retort, but it isn't true.

I think words definitely DO hurt. And the hurt can last a long time if not forever. I think that people who say that saying "sticks & stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" never suffered bullying or verbal abuse. Otherwise, they would know better.

I can't even speak right now. I am totally speechless. I agree with every last one of you.

I try not to think of what I have been threw as a child even as an adult, as tears will start to roll down my face.

Jlove, I am sorry you are hurting so badly.

Know that crying, how ever painful it is, is good. It can release a lot.

I know what you mean. You are not alone in this. Take care of yourself.

Both, I believe for me, are so damaging, and I can't really say one outweighs the other as to the emotional impact they leave. I remember the feelings I experienced with both. I think of them as phantoms in my mind and the hurtful words became echoes.
