I'm supposed to see my obgyn tomorrow for a birth control mishap, and I've been seeing her for almost 8 years now. I'm sure she'll do a pelvic exam, and that makes me very uncomfortable both physically and mentally. I don't know if I should tell her or not about the sexual assault from my husband.

I would tell your doc. She has probably dealt with this before and know how best to approach someone with this issue. Would it help if she told you step by step what she is doing?

She's very good about telling me step by step what she's doing regardless, so that's not much of an issue. It's just being in that vulnerable position, and I don't want to start crying.
***TRIGGER WARNING*** Plus I have 2 self harm cuts on my legs and thighs that will probably be visible (she's used to that already from me), but she always asks if everything is okay and if there's anything she can do to help. |

It's always best to be honest. Have you tried any relaxation exercises?

Have you considered seeing a therapist?

I do see a therapist, and both of them are aware of the sexual abuse happening. But since this has just been occurring over the summer, I haven't needed to see my obgyn for anything until tomorrow. And that makes me uncomfortable, even though I have a long standing relationship with the Dr.

My ob-gyn knows of my abuse, though it was further in the past. It helps a lot that she knows we go over my fears and potential reactions to exams each time. It helps knowing that she doesn't freak out if I totally check out on her...
It totally depends on how comfortable you are telling her though. She will probablly have questions,so you might want to have an idea of how much detail you want to give her. |

I didn't end up telling her. It was a quick 5 minute appt and I was too uncomfortable mentally.
I'm supposed to come back on Tuesday to get a malpositioned IUD removed and a new one put in, and I'm ready to cancel it because of all this. |

I ended up telling my obgyn today when I went in for my IUD. I actually told the medical assistant first, since she knows me very well too. She let my obgyn know before she came into the room, so I didn't have to repeat anything and she didn't ask to discuss it right now. I was obviously a blubbering mess, so she just gave me a hug, gave me the numbers to the office, the on call obgyn and a safe house if need be. I'm just glad I told her and got it out in the open with her without judgment.
