They train you to expect it, and then call you "negative" or "paranoid" when it's obvious that you do.
Over the years I have developed a hypervigilance about how I word things, or even if I bring it up at all. Experience has taught me that I dare not, for example, mention that I'm such-and-such celebrity's "biggest fan." If I don't want to be immediately slammed with a fat-shaming joke, I had better say something like "number one fan" instead. A few minutes ago, intending to be light-hearted, I aired a petty gripe on my Facebook page, inviting others to air theirs as well. Almost right away, I started second-guessing whether that was a good idea. To be specific, my petty gripe is when people instantly comment, "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!" at the merest mention of the show The Brady Bunch. For two reasons it bugs me. One, that line was spoken only ONCE in the entire series, yet people act as if it's the only thing Jan ever said. Two, although there is more than one correct spelling, in the series it was spelled Marcia, not Marsha. Petty, right? I said that from the start. Now I'm thinking I shouldn't have brought it up. I am expecting that people will respond one of two ways, maybe both. Either somebody will lecture me about not being so negative and wasting my energy on such trivia, and they themselves being so far superior to me have better things to do with their time than look for things to be offended about. Or, somebody is going to flood the comments with "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha" just to be a butt. I've had an awful lot of people in my life who get wind that I find something annoying, and then deliberately turn around and do that very thing because they think they're being hilarious. It's almost a reflex to expect it now. When it happens, I'm like, "I knew it." When it doesn't.... then I tell myself that expecting it means I do indeed have a negative attitude. Can anybody relate? |

I can definitely relate although it is too painful for me to talk about at the moment. My heart goes out to you!
