If you hear that someone is speaking ill of you, instead of trying to defend yourself you should say: "He obviously does not know me very well, since there are so many other faults he could have mentioned."

Some people are born into families that encourage education; others are against it. Some are born into flourishing economies encouraging of entrepreneurship; others are born into war and destitution. I want you to be successful, and I want you to earn it. But realize that not all success is due to hard work, and not all poverty is due to laziness. Keep this in mind when judging people, including yourself. ~ Morgan Housel

The awful knowledge that you did what you set out to do, and you would never, ever top it. It was gone the instant you put your hands on it. It was gambling. ~ Colson Whitehead

From a post on Facebook a friend shared:
Writing. Not writing. People reading their stories. People not reading their stories. Editing. Not editing. Not having any good ideas. Having too many ideas and not being able to decide which to write. Having one good idea and worrying they're not good enough to write it. Not having time to write. Having time to write. No Reviews. 999 good reviews and that one jerk who thought the title was too long.

All my life, I thought mentally healthy people were just better at "coping" with "negative" emotions. The very vocabulary of this idea is wrong. The mentally healthy don't "cope" with emotions, they collaborate with them. They know how to listen to, act on, and re-calibrate the signals. ~ Nicky Case

Then he would have missed what he said was the real lesson of the Army, which was that people who tell you what to do—no matter what reason they claim—are performing an act of aggression. ~ Janet Desaulniers in her story "After Rosa Parks"

A transformation, especially one that is deliberately sought, is often perceived as something disloyal, threatening.
I think that the power of art is the power to wake us up, strike us to our depths, change us. What are we searching for when we read a novel, see a film, listen to a piece of music? We are searching, through a work of art, for something that alters us, that we weren’t aware of before. Jhumpa Lahiri won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for “Interpreter of Maladies.” Her most recent novel is “Whereabouts.”

“If you worship money and things — if they are where you tap real meaning in life — then you will never have enough. Never feel you have enough. It’s the truth. Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly, and when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally plant you. On one level, we all know this stuff already — it’s been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, bromides, epigrams, parables: the skeleton of every great story. The trick is keeping the truth up-front in daily consciousness. Worship power — you will feel weak and afraid, and you will need ever more power over others to keep the fear at bay. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart — you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. And so on.”
~ David Foster Wallace, This Is Water: Some Thoughts, Delivered on a Significant Occasion, about Living a Compassionate Life

I am not exactly thrilled to spend the last decades of my life in a constant but necessary battle against decrepitude, but within rational limits, I am resigned to a certain amount of never-ending work. ~ Marcia DeSanctis What I learned on the Aging Beat
