I used to have Alexa but then by mutual agreement my wife and I removed it for a few reasons. Alexa works by listening in and giving responses. for example one day my wife and I were sitting at the table talking and she made the statement to me not to Alexa of saying she needed to email someone and tell them bla bla bla. well Alexa kicked in and said ok emailing so and so and telling them bla bla bla. my wife and I looked at each other and started laughing but we also wondered how many of our friends got emails since we got Alexa and what they possibly could have said. it is a very uncomfortable feeling, like thinking someone is lurking around the corner ready to attack but you dont know when and where and what they are listening to / over hearing spreading to other people. another reason we removed it from our home was the children. the world is already relying on the virtual / cyberworld, look around and you see children face to their cell phones sitting next to each other instead of actual engaging with each other. we have become a world where we have young adults rather than working out their problems and socializing with friends and family they are sucked into this video game and that one and think the world owes them a living, rather than they having to go out and make their living and live a life where they are in control of their own happiness and well being. we dont want our children to rely on alexa for their activities. we want them to use their own imaginations, use their own smarts, put their own young brains to work rather then relying on Alexa supplying their entertainment, answers and so forth.
for fairy tales and such my family rely on family time where we sit down together and do things together, sometimes writing out those fairy tales past down in our heritage and other times making up our own stories. we also buy on amazon childrens story books that we want our children to read and those we read to our children. Alexa does have childrens stories like fairy tales, but for my family we prefer to have our lives more natural oriented vs alexa tell me a fairy tale, alaxa whats the answer to this problem, alexa what mental disorder has this list of symptoms, alexa..... and alexa listening and responding like some creep around the corner... for my wife and I we believe human beings have their own computer (the brain) right inside their bodies to use and fill with imagination and creativity, learning and so forth. maybe you can write your own fairy tales. in our house we find them more interesting then what alexa can find on the internet. |

apart from the gruffalo (which I thought was very good), I'm not impressed by the selection- and also the length of the stories
her version of snow white and the 7 dwarfs, for example is over 30 minutes long.. she has rapunzel, but the narator's voice is scary and sounds like she's not trying to read a fairytale I do agree with amanda's comment about writing your own fairytales/ stories. it can be rewarding and a great distraction |

We don't have Alexa, but we have new fairytale books that we purchased on sale from Target (if you're in the U.S.). We like coloring books based on fairytale characters, too.

I used to enjoy the old audio casette tapes and had quite a few of the disney ones
they came with a little book and " when ever you hear this sound (ding!). turn the page." those were the days |
