Hi there,
Does this sound familiar?
I've been diagnosed with treatment resistant depression after trying many meds, therapy, rTMS, etc. Basically, things seem to work for a while but then the effect wanes. It's especially true with meds.
What I wonder is: Why does this happen? Am I possibly doing something to cause this? Am I somehow malingering?
I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences and what it's been like for you.

Hello barbella: The Skeezyks' perspective is that this is just the way it is. When something is new & different there is something of a stimulating effect to it... sort-of like a placebo effect. But, after a while, the newness wears off & so does the stimulating effect. It's not unlike what keeps people buying new cars when, in reality, they don't need them & sometimes can't even really afford them. You're in all likelihood not doing anything to cause this... & no you're not malingering...

I'm new to this site. Barbella, I haven't been diagnosed with treatment resistant depression by my psychiatrist, but I think it must be what I have. I have been on several different medications over the past few years and it's so discouraging, isn't it? I start a new medication and rock along thinking THIS one will finally work and I will feel like my "normal" self. Sometimes, I will have a side-effect like increased blood pressure, and have to discontinue the medication. If not, I will be okay for a few weeks or months. But slowly, I sink back into depression. Right now, I am on a newly increased dose (100 mg) of generic Zoloft. I feel normal, in control, have no problems sleeping or finishing tasks and I'm full of hope. I'm not a negative person but I am cautious about making long-range plans because I don't want to have to cancel them and disappoint others and myself. It's a struggle, isn't it? I'm glad I found this site and plan to visit often. Blessings to you.

Yes, it is very frustrating to keep having to change medication if it either doesn't work or quits working after a short period of time.

I have the same trouble.

I hope the Zoloft continues to work for you.

wondering if any of your doctors have done a thyroid function test.
I had graves disease years ago and now I have Treatment Resistant Depression- I have "normal" thyroid test levels- but ... I am so miserable... maybe I am fixated on the thyroid issue and it maybe ISN"T my lack of a thyroid... arrrggh. I don't think it is my fault that the drugs don't really work... they need to keep trying... hang in there!
