Hi there!
- There are many "smileys" here to use. Smileys, emoticons, icons, little pictures, whatever you call them, they are fun!
They can help convey our moods such as and our caring etc. Sometimes when we have no words to say, leaving a few emoticons still give support. (BTW there is a minimum of 10 spaces used for any post, or the site won't accept the post. That's why you'll see a few smileys, or lines like ...... in a post.)
- MOST of the smileys provided here have a descriptive title put between two colons. Such as this one is titled grouphug and it's between the two colons like this : grouphug : (But I had to put spaces in there now or you wouldn't see the base, but the smiley instead )
- Some smileys are made from keyboard elements rather than words.
A basic smiley is made up of these two punctuation marks put together : ) (no spaces remember) . You can make these in chat rooms also, just by typing in the "coding." There is a bank of smileys for the chat rooms... click on the one yellow smiley below the chat room text window to make your selection.)
- If you click on the smiley you want from the list on the right, it will automatically insert it into your text window ... it goes wherever your cursor is blinking, so be sure to place your cursor first.
If you click on the [More] option, it brings up all the smileys available on the site in another window, along with their "coding" ( descriptive title and colons) so you can learn how to make them if you wish to study. The little window can be left open in the background, btw.
- SOME of the smileys MUST be put into all capital letters, some MUST be in lower case lettering. (I am hoping this can be changed in website functions but it's a minor detail actually.) This one: (: ROTFLMAO : ) stands for rolling on floor laughing my ***** off and won't work if done with lower case lettering. :rotflmao: See? Others, like this one  must be in lower case to work.
- You can also import smileys (or pictures, emoticons, glitter lines etc) from other sites. When using another site's smiley, be sure to copy and paste it in the right form. If it's already encased in then just insert it into the text window.( Valid file extensions for the whole site: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd txt zip)
If it ends in one of the accepted formats here, such as .jpg then it won't copy directly as a smiley like those already encased in the [img]. For those, copy the identifying line (that ends in .jpg, jpeg) and then click on the yellow photo icon up above the text window. That brings up a small window that you can paste your line into, (the URL of the smiley) click ok and it will display it as a smiley/picture.
- You can also "steal" another member's smiley. If you see something you really enjoy that someone else has already posted, you can also use it. (I like this for birthday wishes especially. Some members have such great lines and emoticons!) For this, RIGHT CLICK on the smiley. That will bring up the information on it...you want the PROPERTIES of the smiley. There, look for the .jpg (or other image identifier) and copy that line. Then use the photo at the top of your text window like for the other smileys from another site.
- Please do be careful in your use of other site's emoticons or pictures. Don't use anything not intended for such use on another site. Some sites offer pics and such for their own site, but if you link to it (and if too many link to their sites) you can crash their site (means it goes down and no one can use it till it's fixed.) If that occurs, your smiley/picture here won't work and all everyone will see is a box with a red X in it. Also, some pictures have that site's name across the picture, that's a good indicator that you're supposed to buy it!
There are sites that are free use of smileys (such as my favorite bestsmileys.com) and some sites are membership driven. You can join a membership driven photo/icon site by buying a membership and then you can use their products (photo, icons) according to your membership level.
- There is a limit of 12 smileys in any one post here. I think that's more than enough, except for an article like this one (I could have used more!)
- For those members who don't like to see smileys, or can't visually handle them, or who's computer takes too long to load them, there is an option here to block them in your profile page options.
- (IMO it's a good idea to "Preview Post" before "Submit New" anytime! This will let you look over your post before actually posting it. When learning how to use smileys and other elements on the site, it's a good thing to double check it first, and make sure it's how you want it! )
- One last note: There's another bank of smileys available for use here. Those are for denoting A NEW THREAD or POST theme. These are located below the text window, below the "tags" option. From there you can select which smiley will ride along with your individual post. (The default smiley will always be the one the OP (originating post) carries though.
- The smileys here are free, just like the site. Have fun!
Hope this helps you to personalize your posts.
