GRRRR I’ve had many UTI’s over the years but in the past year they’ve been much more frequent, more painful, and progress to my kidney’s much faster. I literally have less than 48 hours before the first symptom and a full blown kidney infection.

One would think that a light would go on with the first symptom, but no. Friday during the day I started getting the urge to go more frequently but no light yet. That night I was going to the bathroom and thought “hmm, this is disgusting I must remember to tell my boss that the toilet stinks” (thank God I forgot) Still no light. The fact I used the bathroom at work alone should have made me realize something was up (not to mention the odor). I had to turn off the air conditioning because I was cold (that never happens unless I’m running a fever). No light but I was very proud of myself for saving electricity. Saturday my back starts to hurt. No light. Sunday I suddenly “have” to go NOW and it hurts like hell! So I’m in the bathroom all night long. Can’t go but that’s where I have to be. I finally found the last of my Azo at 5 am so I was able to go to sleep for a couple of hours.

Luckily I was off today and was able to get into the doctor. I hate, hate, hate doctors, but I will not mess around with my kidneys. Since I’ve had three kidney infections in the past 6 months, we were going down the list of possible causes.

I drink lots of fluid, both water and cranberry juice to maintain a healthy UT. I only wear white cotton panties, I have proper hygiene and wipe the correct way. I do occasionally take baths but haven’t in a month or so, so that’s not the cause. I do not use the feminine sprays or douches.

He reminded me to go as soon as I have the urge, something I’m not great about and started asking about frequency and sexual positions. My jaw dropped. Huh? I know I’m supposed to go to the bathroom after sex and wash (before and after), which I do, but sexual positions? I’m pacing like a caged animal because I’m in pain and cannot think straight and you want to discuss my sex life? It turns out that the friction during sex can cause the “normal” bacteria present in the genitals to travel back up starting an infection. For crying out loud! Now what?

I know how you feel for 2yrs i had constant uti's. Id get one every 5 or 6 weeks it was awful. But when i fell pregnant they stopped, except for one last extremely painful one! And since ive had my son ive only had one. Before i fell pregnant the doctors were going to do an ultrasound on my kidneys cos they thought one mite be mis shaped or too big, could this be why you mite be getting them so frequently? I guess theres no harm in finding out. Im sorry this keeps happening to you, hope you get better soon and find a way to stop them

Thanks so much for your reply, it made me remember a few things. Hindsight being 20/20 I realize now I started getting them quite frequently after I was married and my sex life was more regular. After I had my kids I’d get them once a year or so. But in the past year it’s been an ongoing problem.

While the nurse was taking my vitals, she also suggested that being on your feet for long periods of time (due to work), stress, and not being able to go as soon as you get the urge all contribute to this problem.

I hope you find a solution to your problem.

I have a few thoughts!
-i know its notorously unsexy, and not at all spontaneous - but both of you could try showering quickly before you hop into bed(or floor, or table, or wherever else)
-some people have great success with using medicated wipes(the antibacterial kind, make sure they are made for the rear though!) throughout the day.
-Pee DIRECTLY after sex. This helps to clear out your tract. I think you said you already did this.
-have you been checked for a yeast infection? For some reason every time i get a yeast infection, I get a UTI as well. And sometimes with mild yeast going on, you dont notice symptoms. Just a thought.
-LOTS of cranberry juice. JUICE. NOT drink. has to be the real deal. If you dont like it you can also take cranberry supplements. That works just the same. Also garlic supplements can make the body a hostile environment for bad bacteria. Worth a try.

Be careful with the AZO - use sparingly as although not proven in humans it HAS been shown in animals to be potentially carcinogenic.. and the rest of the dyes in that family ARE carcinogenic.

Things slowly start drying out as we get older. Consider applying lube (discreetly if you're shy, wantonly if you're not) before connecting the parts. KY or Astroglide are grate, non-flavored, non-heating, non-spermicidal, otherwise it can compound the irritation. That helped me a lot, I rarely get UTIs any more. And, shower ASAP after a BM, to reduce the risk further.

Ask your MD if you might be diabetic also.

I had this problem for years and thankfully I haven't had any more UTIs in about a year But if you are sexually active than it is MUCH easier to get a UTI and also give your partner a UTI. It's not a "STD" but it can be transmitted sexually.

What the doctors told me to do was to use the restroom BEFORE and AFTER sex, even if you don't have to, make yourself. This worked and now I'm free of UTIs! I wish you luck on this, I know they stink! Take care!

Thanks so much for the tips. I don't think the last one was fully cleared up because I'm already showing symptoms for a new one.

Have you tried grape fruit juice. Every once in a blue moon I start feeling like I'm going to get one, and I drink a ton of grape fruit juice, and water, and it will go away.

Fruit juices like Grapefruit, cranberry or even vineagar will balance out the acidity in your urine and relieve some of the symptoms. I've been pushing fluids, mainly water to try to flush it out before it becomes a full blown infection. I'm just really tired of dealing with this so frequently. I thought that part of my life was over.

Its really, really bad your infections are more frequent. It could mean your organs are literally "cracking" & you basically have a permenant UTI eventually. Please ask your doctor about how to prevent this!! I'm so, so sorry you have to deal with this!

I get them frequently, too. For me to prevent them, I need lots of cleaning, washing that "area" for at least 30 seconds daily, make my man wash for about 30 seconds too, & lubeeeee!! & he's gotta go easy on me if he's well endowed...Rigor isn't always fun.

I had a friend tell me that men without circumcisions are more likely to have more sensitivity since they didn't get a peice of them lopped off, so they'll be less likely to thrust in that way that can be so painful for us! Thought that was a cool fact.
