I noticed I picked an avatar with major hair issues....how funny, at least there's some humor here.

You may have androgenic alopecia, or female pattern baldness. Females don't usually go bald like men do, there is just a general thinning of the hair. Contrary to popular belief, females can get androgenic alopecia too. Something like 95% of hair thinning is androgenic alopecia. It could also be telogen effluvium. That happens a few months after a stressful event or surgery.

The other 5% or so of thinning is caused by other factors like hypothyroidism, low iron, and other conditions. Some medications can cause hair loss too.

It's best to see your doctor to get tested for any medical conditions. If you don't have any condition, then it is most likely androgenic alopecia or telogen effluvium. To tell the difference between the two you'd need to get a scalp biopsy from a dermatologist.

There is no treatment for telogen effluvium. Usually it is just temporary.

For androgenic alopecia you can take a birth control pill like Yasmin to reduce the androogens in your body that are causing the thinning. Rogaine (minoxidil) can also grow back hair or stop thinning in most cases.

Protein - a can of tuna (each day) goes a long way in helping you keep the hair you have.

Hi~

Like you, I too am losing my hair. I definitely have felt less womanly. Unlike you I am not menopausal or anything like that yet. I'm a month away from 55 and get a monthly period. I'm blaming my hairloss on a slow thyriod and the hormones screwing me up.

Good Luck!
Andrea

I am hearing you and with you all the way. I have very thinned out hair at the right ( bang area mainly ). Sides are completely full as is the back, but I can no longer part it in the middle or wear bangs anymore, as you see so many empty spaces where they hair fell out and never returned. This began when I was 45, and I will be 49 next month, and still get a monthly cycle, but have serious nite sweats and heavy cramping.
I have done everything, vitamin wise, herbal treatments, homeopathy, scalp massages and the very expensive Viviscal tablets which cost me $ 300.
Nothing at all works, so probably female pattern thinning. I wear it super short now and despite it being very hard, I just forced myself to accept I will never have a full head of hair again, so try to pick very short chic pixie haircuts that minimize showing the balder areas.
You are not alone.
