So I have been told by two doctors before I should get on birth control to regulate my menstrual cycle. My cycle is way out of whack, and when I do have a peirod (I may not have one for up to 4 months at a time) they are painful and heavy. I had a gyncolgical exam last year and the doctor said everything was fine, she couldn't figure out why my peroids did that but if it was causing me discomfort I should consider birth control to regulate it. Well being the stubbron mule I am, I have yet to really fathom the idea, but since I'm not regulating and there is a small chance I may become sexual active soon, I figure it would be best to start.

I really don't understand the diffrences in birth control, and all the side effects, which is best and etc..

lol the best way to describe my knowledge on birth control is this little dude --->

Anyone have any recommendations? Or certain ones I should avoid? Any and all input is welcomed, I"m quite lost on the subject, adn far to shy to talk to my medical doctor about it(plus it's a small town, I don't trust anyone in that office to keep their trap shut, and last thing I want is stuff going around)

Thank you!!

Hi Typo,

The pill is pretty good at regulating periods, and making them more light.

You may want to check out the site below for answers. While some people here may have had a tough time on pill A or B, doesn't mean that it isn't the right choice for you. I'd recommend looking at professional resources to make an educated decision, and ask your doctor for the prescription.

http://www.womenshealth.gov

Both sites have lots of information ~ pros and cons listed.
Best wishes to you!

I agree with Shezbut. BC is just like psych meds in the sense that some of them work better for some people and some work better for others. When you see your pcp, make sure that you mention any of your psych meds because sometimes there are counter indications between them. Good luck on finding one that works for you. Sometimes it takes multiple tries.

When I was birth control the first time, it made my periods lighter and shorter and I had no cramps. A few years after I started, they put me on triliptal, even though they knew I was birth control. Over a year later and two Pdocs later and several different pharmacists, one finally told me that triliptal was making my birth control ineffective for protecting against pregnancy (luckily, I hadn't had sex yet). I was pretty pissed, to say the least. Moral of the story... ask questions of your pdoc, regular doctor, and the pharmacist to make sure you drugs won't interact, and always use backup protection such as condoms.

Another note about birth control... I went off all my drugs (birth control and psych meds) but after a few months went back on birth control. Exact same pill, but completely different results. Sure, my periods are short, I don't have cramps, and less acne, but my period are SO much heavier. When I finish this prescription, I'm going to try a new birth control because I think I'm getting a little anemic.

Just talk to your doctors and maybe try one or two out.

Good luck! Be safe!!

Ro

One of the original reasons I went on birth control (actually, a major reason both times I went on it) was to even out my moods during the month. Right before and during my period, I had horrible, horrible mood swings. It evened it out a lot..not completely, but did really help. I'm already dealing with depression, so I don't think my birth control contributed to that. I also didn't put on any weight... My bosom didn't even change sizes.

I'm sorry if you had those side affects

ladymacbethadmusen,

No, I never have gained weight from meds. Depression is pretty consistent though for as far back as I can remember.

I don't take pills to prevent pregnancy ~ I've had a hysterectomy (for medical purposes).

I first went on the pill at 16 to help lighten and regulate my periods. Worked really very well. Once I came off it (couple years later) my periods remained lighter. Over the next 10 years or so they got to be heavier again. Another course of a couple years lightened them up again. I don't think I experienced weight fluctuation due to that. My mood was better since my periods were lighter and I didn't feel as crampy. Different pills do affect different people differently so it really is about giving one a shot and seeing how you find it. Luck.
