I took Accutane for my acne about 3 years ago for six months. I've recently heard a lot of bad things about it that they've discovered since I stopped using the drug. Today my mom and I were talking about it, and I thought of my ability to have children someday. I want to have a baby, and I'm afraid of being sterile from taking this stupid medication that did not help me whatsoever Does anyone know of fertility problems related to Accutane use? I'm mad that I went ahead and took those pills without considering the future effects they might have had.

I think one of the side effects can be male sterility but females might miscarry or there might be birth defects. However, the major side effects are irritable bowel disease; if you are not having/did not have bowel problems, I don't know that I'd worry about other problems. But I'd talk to your current gynecologist, find out what's currently known, etc.

Thanks Perna. I'm curious though, because I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I don't know if it's caused by my past accutane use. I'm going to start going to a gynecologist again when I turn 18, I'll ask her about this then.

Yes! The IBS can very well be caused by the Accutane! Tell your mother and talk to a lawyer.

Thanks for the link I've wondered about that, but never pursued it because they don't mention anything about Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is different from Irritable Bowel Disease. Interesting though.
