So I'm not sure if these are hemorrhoids but if they are THEY HURT!! I was kinda sick earlier and had some pretty bad diarrhea and now I have these big red bumps all around my bum! I tried to wash thinking it was just some kind of rash but that hurt even worse! So I put some hydrocortisone (2.5%) on them. It's so icky! Does anyone else have this issue? I'm only 23 and am not pregnant so it seems like I shouldn't be getting them. Is that weird?

I'm not a doctor, but it isn't uncommon for fecal matter to irritate skin.
If the bumps are surrounding the ****, I would say that the acidity of the feces is the cause of skin irritation. If, however, the bumps are on your buttock muscles, the rash is probably caused by something else. Be sure to wash the area gently with a mild soap. Don't use harsh temperatures or scented soaps. Those two are biggies for taking good care of skin ~ sensitivity waxes and wanes throughout our lives. Unscented soaps helps a lot as does tepid water temperature. If that doesn't help at all, see a doctor. That's my advice ~ hope that things improve for you soon!

Thanks shez. I applied some hydrocortisone and it took care of it in less than a day. Actually within a few hours. I think we use unscented soap? I'll have to check but what you're saying makes sense. Thanks again. I'll try your suggestions to hopefully prevent this from happening again.

Sounds like you have diaper rash. Keeping the area clean and dry and using hydrocortisone works.

If you have a mirror take a look and see what the bumps look like. Hemorrhoids look similar to varicose veins (but sometimes they are internal and not easily visible). Tucks helps. The hydrocortisone is a good idea too. I imagine they are tender when you are cleaning the area; some baby wipes may help that.

The hydrocortizone is good, but can be harsh on your skin, so be careful with how much you use it. If you need to use something, you can also try Diaper Rash cream. I always keep a tube of it in my bathroom, because I get these rashes sometimes. Just an idea.

good old fasioned zinc paste. Seriously - for babies bums and your bum too. In fact, if you have the trots again - start using it right away after you have wiped and gently cleaned the area - the next round wont hurt so much.

I think it was the field work. Im a grad student who works in the forest and I did about 46 hours of field work in 2 weeks. It was 108 degrees out and about 80-90% humidity and, since we're working with chain saws and such, we have to wear long pants all the time.
I used hydrocortisone and it cleared up within hours and, since field season has pretty much stopped, it hasn't happened again. I wish there was a way to NOT sweat profusely. But I guess it's to be expected when you're working 12 hour days in that kind of heat. Plus our work is pretty much cutting and carrying logs through the forest so I was sweating buckets! |

carry a ziplock baggie containing baby wipes that are highly rinsed and remoistened with water...so when you potty you can rinse with the wipe...and try to save the hydrocortisone for rare times.Use a& d ointment instead as a barrier between potty visits.

Good idea wolfsong. I originally had this extra strength hydrocortisone for this thing called keritosis pilaris which is basically an inflammation of hair follicles. I had these little red bumps all over my arms and legs and I think normal hydrocortisone cream is only 0.5% while this stuff is 2.5% so I have to be sparing when using it but it only took one application and it was totally better.
My bf does keep wipes in the house, the only problem is that when we are doing field work, the bathroom is the woods. And I can't use anything that's not biodegradable and most definitely do not want to be carrying around a nasty wipe with me all day haha. Hopefully we can figure something out before the next terrible field day! |

It is also helpful to let the area get some air. Wear cotton panties during the day and go "bottomless" when sleeping. Sometimes doing the latter can work wonders for me after just one night.

Something else to keep in mind....when a bout of diarreha comes on put some vasoline on your rectum.....I know from experience....I suffer from a chronic form of colitis and the vasoline put on immediatley from the start....saves a lot of pain later.
