Hello everyone, tommarow i'm getting my FIRST pap smear...And I'm kind of scared.
I've never had one before, And it just seems like it's going to be very awkward and painful. The thing i'm most worried about is the awkwardness, knowing someone's looking at my lady parts is very weird... I have no idea why but I feel like i'm not ready for one .. ![]() I have been sexually active about a year and a half back, and i'm almost 18, so my doctor is making me come in for one tommarow in the morning. I've already told my mom i've been sexually active, but it was very awkward as well. What are they going to do?? What kind of questions are they going to ask?? I'm TERRIFIED ![]() ![]() Any idea's on how to help me relax ? __________________ I can feel you all around me Thickening the air i'm breathing Holding on to what i'm feeling Savoring this heart thats healing ![]() |

Tell your doctor it is your first time. Yes it is awkward. I used to have a really great doc who would chat away with me while he was doing it and with him it was no big deal. But he retired and my new doc is quiet and that makes me uncomfortable.
When the doc inserts the speculum it is only mildly uncomfortable and then s/he will use a cotton swab to rub on your cervix. The swab is a bit annoying but not really painful. I think the thing that I hate most is I get cold with just that tiny sheet to cover me. Your doc will probably want to check to see if you have HPV and if you do not you can return for an immunization. Not all insurance covers this but I think it is a good idea. Your doc should also do a breast exam and should teach you how to do your own breast exam. If you have any questions about contraception you can ask. Perhaps you may want contraception in addition to condoms. __________________ The purpose of life is not to be happy. You have absolutely nothing to worry about. First of all, gynocologists see "lady parts" every day and nothing phases them. Don't be embarrassed because it's all clinical to them.
As far as pain, there is NONE. You will feel the speculum inserted, but most doctors will put some kind of lubricant on it so it slides right in. The speculum will be opened, but the vagina will naturally open so again, this is not painful at all. The doctor will then swab you inside which you will barely feel. After the pap smear the doctor will probably use his fingers to give you a pelvic exam. You will feel pressure from this, but that's all. Again, NO pain. Just try to relax and it will all be over within a about 2-3 minutes max. It's really not that big of a deal at all. |

Thanks for you replys.
Yeah, I have no idea why I was making such a big deal about it, it actually wasnt that bad, my doc and nurse talked to me the whole time, telling me what they where going to do etc. The only thing that bothered me was the metal thing they put in me, it hurt! Other than that, I'm glad I got one so I know for sure nothing is going on. __________________ I can feel you all around me Thickening the air i'm breathing Holding on to what i'm feeling Savoring this heart thats healing ![]() |

Yeah that metal dealie is kinda painful! I'm glad your first experience was good and your nurse and doc were comforting. It's always nice when that first time is a good one. Hopefully now you wont be so scared to go next time!
Keep us updated on your results! Typically you get a little postcard in a week or so saying your pap smear was normal. I was always told I would hear from them unless there was something wrong. Well this last one called me and starts out "I have your syphilis and gonorrhea results back..." (they test that every time) and my heart dropped! She said "and everything came back normal" and I went "THEN WHY DID YOU CALL ME?!" lol So if you get a phone call or a post card don't flip! Apparently everyone does it differently lol |
