A friend of mine has given me the name of a OB/GYN that has received his education and degrees from two foreign medical schools : Instituto Superior de Ciencias Medicas de la Habana ( Cuba), and Universidad de Ciencias Medicas Centro Colon San Jose ( Costa Rica). I have searched his profile in Vitals.com and HealthGrades.com and both sites state that these schools have not been rated. I worry because I remember reading that some doctors go to study in medical schools in Central America because they are lenient and students can graduate faster.

I need to have a hysteroscopic polypectomy done soon. I want to make a good decision not one based on fear.

If I were you, I would stick with doctors who have practiced a few yrs at least or ones recommended by your general doctor. I'm lucky because I have a family physician whos's a woman and she does the routine pap tests but I would need a referral to see a gynecologist.

Is your doctor board certified? If so I would be comfortable to be treated by him/her.

In addition to asking about being board certified..... This may not apply and may be a bad assumption, but if this is a laser based / laparascopic procedure, you can ask too if they are certified in lasers / laparascopic procedures. If it applies, do ask, as this credential can help you in your decision with whom to go with. Good luck!

While they may not be rated, and they were trained outside of the country....they have to be certified to practice in the states and on a state by state basis. They will not let someone come in from Cuba who has only practiced on goats. They have to be at the same level as any other doctor. If he isn't board certified then I wouldn't go to that practice at all. And probably report him too :P
Thanks for this!
