I recently heard that having a lot of soy in your diet may affect periods. It makes sense. Birth controls have hormones in them, and soy can add/affect/have estrogen in it. My question is: I suffer from SEVERE pms symptoms, otherwise classified as PMDD. I tried a birth control, and it affected me very negatively on an emotional/psychological level. I am on an antidepressant, and that helps, and I hope to get chaste berry. Has anyone heard how soy can affect this, for both the good and the bad? Also, does anyone know of any other vitamin supplements? my gyno keeps wanting me to try diff birth controls, but I think it's too risky.

I don't remember why/what it is in dairy but there is something in it that affects female hormones in a negative way; whereas soy and almond milk do not. Soy specifically affects prostaglandin production to ease cramping to some degree. The downside is that soy contains oxalates which can enhance calcium oxalate kidney stone production if too much is added (soy products with milks, let alone if you eat other oxalates: nuts, spinach, etc.). * So moderation is the key, adding some can be beneficial but not too much *

There are great books by Dr. Susan Lark, that my doctors have recommended over the years, on various female disorders that discuss vitamin supplements and helpful dietary suggestions for symptoms. There is one for PMS: A self help book; not sure about PMDD; it's been awhile since I've looked them up but there may be now. I've found them in bookstores and online.

If you decide to go the BC pill route: Finding the right BC pill is trial and error to find the right one, but with so many out there, it is a matter of working with your doc, patience, and time.

It can be hard dealing with symptoms and finding the right treatment for us. I really wish you well in finding what works best for you!
