Sigh. I'm now in that miserable situation where I found a lump and had it checked out with a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. On Tues. afternoon I meet with my doc to go over the results. Would some of you folks please share with me any similar experiences? Thanks.....

I've had several over the years and they've all been benign. They usually are. Try to focus on the odds that it's nothing. Believe me, if it were "something", your doctor would already have contacted you.

Thanks. I was told the results probably wouldn't be available until Monday. So, I am having to wait that out. I am assuming even if things look bad, they will let my regular doc tell me when I meet with her.....on Tues.

(((PAYNE1))) - I agree with notz its probably benign(meaning not cancerous). I have dense breasts and I did have a suspicious area a few years ago. Had to get it biopsied with a new procedure called a mammotom (spelled wrong). Its where they vacuum the area while they do a mammogram at the same time. Anyway it was negative. I pray it won't be serious and try to worry in the mean time.

I had a core biopsy done of a 1cm mass (after ultrasound and mammogram) last month. 80% of masses found are benign-- I'm guessing that they will tell you next whether they recommend a biopsy or not?

But mine was benign. Anne

Dear Payne,

I am a four year (hurray!) survivor of stage III breast cancer. The waiting is nerve wracking and the only way to cope is to live through it. Things that helped me to cope with the waiting and worrying - after the mammogram, before the biopsy, waiting for the pathology report . . .

Eat well - comfort foods that are also nutritional (soups, stews, big, tasty salads . . . a bit of chocolate . . .)
If you're having trouble falling asleep, do not hesitate to ask your MD for a prescription sleep med - enough for 3 - 4 days. If you don't get a decent night's sleep, the stress of the worrying increases immensely.
Call your best friend. Pour out to her/him all your worries & fears. It will lighten your load.
Do some online research, if you are so inclined. Information is a great fear-fighter! Stick with reputable sites (breastcancer.org is a good place to start).
Ask a close friend to go with you to all appointments. The company of a trusted friend helps. A lot.
Make an effort to dress in your favorite, nicest-looking clothes. It helped me boost my mood.

Best of luck. You're in my thoughts.

TwentyToOne

Update: I have calcification and a biopsy has been recommended. I am planning on going to Duke Hospital's breast clinic. They have a great name there. I will be meeting with someone for initial consultation on Jan. 3, taking my mammogram and ultrasound CD along for them to review.

Thanks so much for all your concern.

Thank you for the update ((PAYNE1)). Sorry to hear you need further investigation but try not to worry until you get more results. I've gone through what you're having done...the ultrasound and biopsy, then 2 weeks waiting. It was hard to wait, but I kept reminding myself, I wasn't going to get all stressed out...thinking it may end up benign. I pray this is how it will go for you.

I have an interesting story the day I got mine biopsied - it was a new type of getting the biopsy and the doctor made a mistake. They had to compress the breast while using the vacuum of the area. The doctor wasn't used to operating the pedal and her plastic clog got stuck on the pedal ...it kept compressing more than it was supposed to do. It was beyond painful. I pray yours go well and everything will be alright. Keeping you in my prayers.

I'll be praying for you, PAYNE1. My grandmother had breast cancer, but it was detected early and easily treated with estrogen pills. It is now in remission. Whatever the result is, it's great you're being proactive and doing something about it as quickly as you have.

Keep us posted!
