I feel so sad about this... my sister was 16 weeks pregnant when her doctor couldn't find the heartbeat anymore. She's having a D&C sometime soon... She's not the kind of person to share feelings (my family is bad at it) but I can't imagine not being devastated about it. I don't really know how to be a support. I was looking forward to being an aunt for the first time, and feel depressed that I won't be. She has PCOS so it was very rare that she did get pregnant. So I don't know if she will ever get pregnant again. I guess you can never know. Is miscarrying that common? She was in her 2nd trimester. She takes metformin for pre-diabetes associated with the PCOS/insulin resistance, and they said after 14 weeks ( i think) she had to stop taking it, and within a week she was told she now has diabetes, and miscarried. Just sounds so strange.

So sorry to hear that your sister miscarried. And also that your dream of being an aunt was lost.

From what I read, miscarriage is an unfortunate risk associated with PCOS. Taking the metformin was the best precautionary thing that her doctor prescribed, but there is data showing some possible safety issues. Most women with PCOS are most at risk of miscarriage during the first trimester - but there are so many other factors that could cause it to happen later.

Hopefully the doctor will be able to determine the cause when the D&C is done. Not that it brings back the baby, but perhaps there was some other reason - all beyond anyone's control.

Please voice your support to your sister. Don't ignore that the miscarriage happened. Let her know you love and care about her and grieve her loss as well.

I am sorry to hear the sad news, krisakira.

My ex SIL does have PCOS and was remarkably able to carry and deliver a healthy boy just about 2 years ago. She'd thought that the PCOS dx made her infertile forever too! You just never know, I guess.

((((hugs)))) to your sister & yourself. Best wishes!!

Second trimester miscarriages aren't as common as first trimester ones. But as a person who has had two miscarriages myself, I feel for your sister very deeply.

Hugs to you and yours

My heart aches for your sister, for you, and the family knowing the pain of such a loss. Hopefully that if she wants in the future, not to give up hope with the PCOS and as mentioned before, they will know more after the D&C to help her with future pregnancy.

Sending the most heartfelt sympathies during this time and big hugs, -F
