I need female advice.

Anyone take birth control to control the VERY BAD MOOD SWINGS that happen about a week prior to your period every month? It seems to always hit me and I'm always surprised when I'm a total basketcase. And this is even when I'm on antidepressants, I'm glad I'm on them or it would be worse. But with my pain and agony as well, seeing as my period is ridiculously short (which would be good IF it wasn't for my intense pain)...

I'm debating going on birth control. Now, way back in 2010 I was on progesterone-only pills for a brief time. They made my moods worse.

But I've been told that estrogen increases risk of blood clots. Is this true? I sit all day (wheelchair) so blood clots are a very bad thing for me to have.

Anyone got recommendations of drugs? I'm going to see my doctor sooner or later but I'd like an idea of what to ask for.

I was the same with the mood before my period, mine too were very short and agony. Im on microgynon 30ED and the pain is practically gone!! And the moods are fine --i even got taken off of my antidepressants! There is a blood clot warning, saying, of 100,000 women who are not on the pill, about 5 will have a blood clot in a year... then of 100,000 on a pill like the microgynon, about 15 will have a blood clot in a year. It does say if you're in a wheelchair it may increase the risk, but that to speak to your Dr who could try find an alternative. Jess xx

Another possibility is Prozac. It is often used for PMDD. Some people just take it the week before their period.

I don't personally have experience with this issue, but I have friends who have used this strategy with success.

Best,
EJ

Hi EJ! Thanks. I'm actually on Prozac ironically for my depression. I wonder if I could up a dosage for a week prior... something to discuss with a doc I suppose.

Thanks! Yeah I'm a bit worried about that, given my prior experiences with it. I just hope if I go this route again that I have better luck!

So I started Micronor.

Oh my am I ever in agony. No more moody than normal, but if I'm expected to survive several menstrual cycles like this I will cry. (I don't consider this "spotting" whatever that is supposed to imply). Ouch.

I have never noticed where birth control helped or hurt my mood. I have started and stopped bc on several occasions and never noticed a difference. Some brands may affect it more than others though...I am not sure on that one.
