Have just got a recommendation from a friend as to who to go to. I have only seen a gynae when I was 17 or so, before I was sexually active, to go on the pill and as a "check-up". But he hardly checked anything - if you know what I mean.
Now it's 9 years later. I've been sexually active since I'm 18, I'm on birth control. I have my proper period regularly, but "spot" inbetween a lot. I say "spot", because it's often enough to need a tampon and this is for most of the month. I am "hoping", I guess, that this is due to all my psych meds - mood stabiliser and ADs mainly - so hold thumbs. I am a bit nervous. And what if I'm spotting on the day? It's a male gynae... |

i always talk with women gynos because women can help women medically than men can. i remember being on the pill and i was spotting, i had to wait for it to stop so i can actually have my pap smear i am the same age as you. i haven't been back at the gyno since 09 and my period stopped coming on from oct 09-jan 2010 i think its cuz my thyroid went of whack and now my period has changed.
i need to ask a gyno what happen back then and why did my period stop for 3 months but have no money to go the state insurance probably will not pay for it. |

I have booked for next Friday. And that day I should be fine. Did some google research and believe this doc (it's a man, but I totally understand your point on females) is really nice.
Not sure what to expect. Assume I wear any clothes as I'll just undress anyway and get into a gown? Going to just take some time off work. I know everyone asks this, but is there any pain really? I mean, I am sexually active and in a relationship, so it's not like I'm not comfortable with my "parts". I just called and asked to book an appointment. Told the receptionist I hadn't been to see them before (she will have assumed I'd been to a gynae before though, I'm sure...), but I didn't ask for any specific tests (pap smear?!) To be done. What constitutes a standard "appointment"? |

Keep in mind birth control can cause spotting as well and you are right certain psych meds can throw you off as well and can even cause you to lactate. I stopped risperdal for that very reason......

a standard appt for me includes a pap, which is not painful but the speculum is usually cold. then the dr puts his fingers inside you and presses inside and out to check for abnormalities. there is some discomfort here. then you should get a breast exam. sometimes the dr doesnt give one automatically, but i always ask for it.
the first time can be nerve wracking, but its not really that bad and is over pretty quick. ive gone to the gyno while spotting before, and she was ok with it. you should talk to your doctor about the spotting. its probably due to the meds, but he should be aware of it. |

Thanks everyone for your input. Sounds like I'll be ok. Except getting out my. Clothes and into a gown and having someone touch me "there" when it's not intimate

Oh. It's weird. It's not the most pleasant but better then the dentist. They ask Q's: when was your last period, how many partners, are you in a magnanimous relationship currently, what meds do you take, is there anything you want to discuss. Then the get undressed. I usually cover my face w/ the pillow thats on the table and wait for it to be over. They check everything inside then take a little toothbrush thing or q tip and get cells. To me this hurts. They say relax. (Yeah right) It's not horrible just not your average place to have pain. Then the do check inside w/ there fingers. Weird but not painful. Breast exam most of the time. Weird but not painful.
I have had male and female gyno's. I prefer female. But I like my male alot to. His wife was the receptionist. He see's a million vagina's in a day so it's nothing to them. I would rather go to the gyno any day over the dentist. |
