Scared to switch to IUD

This Friday I am going to outpatient procedure to have the IUD inserted. I was fine and excited to have it done up until I had my exam today, where my doctor was going on and on about the complications that could happen because I've never had children or sex. She talked about how the IUD can pierce through the uterus, or how I could have cramps every day until it's removed, or that I may end up needing to take the pill along with the IUD, and all of these things and now I'm really scared to get it.

I wanted something I could feel safe with, and now I only have five days to decide but I'm really scared something will go wrong while I'm under anesthesia. :_(

If it were me, I wouldn't do it. If you are getting the IUD as a contraceptive, find something better. I preferred a diaphragm for that purpose. I am all about being able to have control of what is happening to my body.
An IUD is something I considered once. I chose differently & I am happy with that decision.

I'd be scared of thatt too. I was on the Depo shot in my early 20's and it made me bat ***** crazy. I'm scared to get on any bc because of that now, but I don't want anymore kids anytime soon.

I'm going through with it. Today is the procedure, and I'm not off to a good start.

Had to wake up at 5am to take these meds to open up my cervix, and a half hour in these horrible cramps kick in. It made me feel constipated and after I finished using the bathroom I passed out, hitting the floor so hard that I can remember how loudly my head hit, then crawled into my dad's room and passed out in there. The cramps pursued until I curled up into a ball on the floor for about a half hour. The cramps subsided but I do not know when they will return.

I'm going to talk to the doctor's about getting rx valium or vicodin, if that's how bad the cramps are without the IUD.

I'm glad to hear they give you something to open you up - that makes sense. I had a copper 7 iud back in the 70's - it could be used for women who had never been pregnant because it was so small. Still it was kind of a weird alien feeling as it was being inserted, no drugs, because you're not usually that aware of that specific part of your body. But then you dont feel anything once it's settled in there. So it sounds like the drug-induced cramps might be the hardest part. Good luck out there (or in there!) today

Yikes! Sounds like the meds they gave you was in the same classification as something used to induce labor, maybe on a milder scale perhaps. Having birth control for me personally is a 50/50. I'd love to get on something worry free like an IUD, but I already have trouble with cramps etc. I'd rather have labor contractions than period cramps. Good luck with your IUD, hopefully that helps you out!

I have a copper iud and I love it. It was uncomfortable to put in, my periods are a bit heavier and longer, but it is mostly just great not to have to think about it.

Procedure is done! It was not as scary as I thought, considering I was laying down to rest and the next minute the doctor was shaking me awake, and I asked him if it was time for the surgery and he said it was already done!

I'm having mild cramps but that should clear up soon. I'm glad I went through with this.

Forgive the stupid question, do you have to be knocked out to get all types of iud's? I have some friends with them and they never mentioned that part. Is this a special type?

Yes, I am someone who is extremely sensitive to pain and people touching me. I knew I'd be hysterical if I had to be awake during this procedure--I was scared enough to get the surgery already. But normally IUD's are done in the office without anesthesia.

Today is the first official day and a half of me wearing it, and I'm so glad I went through with the procedure. I feel like it was my decision and that it was a good decision. The doctors said everything was perfect, and on Thursday I'm getting an ultrasound just to be sure it's in correctly.

The cramping has subsided and I'm bleeding lightly, and I'm excited to see how my first period turns out...or if I don't get one at all!

I had to get one because my epilepsy medication messes with any other type of birth control. Ive had mine for almost 3 years now and I dont regret any of it! I went through a decent amount of pain too. The day i got it i was totally out of commission with cramps. Then I would randomly get cramps for the first 6 months. Sometimes when i had my period, sometimes not. It wasn't until about the 8 month mark that everything felt normal! I had really bad cramps before the IUD and now I barely have any. The best part is, I barely ever have a period. If I do, they last 2 days MAX and all i need is a panty liner.

It can be scary hearing and reading some of the horror stories. I'm so happy you're doing well with it so far! I hope you get the same great results!! xox
