I ask because for the past week Ive been under horrible stress. But Ive really been stressed for quite a while. Its because of finacial problems & my kids. My youngest has been doing bad in school as far as grades. His teachers are constantly calling me. I cant hardley do parent teacher confrences due to my panic/PTSDisorders. And that stresses me cause I dont want them to think Im an unfit parent. But the biggest stressor is my oldest. Hes mentally ill and has Autism with Explosive Violent Behavior Disorder. For those who dont know,my grandmother took him from me when he was 4 hes 14 now. He is very violent and has many triggers. Ive tried for years to get him psychiatric help only to have her intervene. She is the policy holder on his Medicaid and has to sign off on any med treatment. She has refused. So in the past couple of weeks my son has attacked a student on 2 occasions, his teacher on many. So the child protection people stepped in and with them, I forced my grandmothers hand into putting him in a facility for an RX & mental assesment. He is doing good so far but her lies on me and her lies to cover up my sons violence, is getting to be too much.

Now to my question. Ive always had springy tight curls. But in the past 3 weeks, Ive noticed that they are getting straight. My hair went from course springy curls to halfway straight, soft hair. And it feels thicker. I dont use any chemicals on my hair. I do flat iron but since I noticed the change 3 weeks ago, I havent. My weight hasnt changed (I think I might of put on a few pounds but not much), my meds are the same (Celexa 10mgs & Klonopin .5 mgs been on them about 4 months now), Im not depressed but Im severely anxious. All the time. I cant hardley type because my hands are so shaky. I just about pee muself at any sudden loud noise. I feel wound up but have no motivation to do housework. Im constantly having panic attacks, which exhaust me. And I hardley sleep good. I get mabye 5 hours a night but Im constantly tossing & turning and I remember being sort of awake and looking at the clock every hour or so. Im so stressed!!! Its hard to function. Klonopin kind of helps and the Celexa has helped me by helping me think logically instead of thinking Im dying all the time. And its helped my depression.

I talked to my sister who is a hairdresser about my curls. And she said that sometimes when people start getting grey hair, the texture changes also. Im getting a few strands of silver here in the past year. But nothing noticable.

I guess my question boils down to: Is my hair responding to constant stress, age (Im 32), or something else? And how can I get my curls back?!?

I'm not sure if stress effects the hair, but your hair can change with time.

How do you style your hair when you want it curly? I went from having a natural wrinkle more than curls and it was super fuzzy. I discovered two keys that have made my curls come through. The first is I quit brushing it. I finger comb in when my hair is wet as I put the conditioner in. I no longer wrap it in a towel, I scrunch it gently in an old T-shirt. The second is finding the right product. For me, depending on how long it is, I use Divacurl Angel and/or Aveda's be curly to encourage the curl and allow it be be soft and bouncy. If you Google "curly girl" there are more detailed instructions.

My hair went from wavy to curly over a couple of years. My hair stylist wasn't surprised and said that it happens. Stress can make a lot of changes including in your hair. It can even cause your hair to fall out (yikes).

I have very curly hair myself, and at one time, had a lot of it too!

Two years or so ago, I went through intense stress and major depressive disorder. My hair was coming out at I showered, simply putting conditioner in. Big chunks of hair lost every day! After 6 months or so (which felt like a year), the hair loss finally stopped. Since then, *knock on wood*, my hair is better. No more hair loss ~ and it's still very curly hair ~ but my scalp is slightly visible on top of my head. One can clearly see the area that was operated on 7 years ago (as no hair grows where they cut and removed parts).

Hey Gnat. I never spent much time on it when I left it curly. I just washed/conditioned it. Like you I only use tshirts and finger combing.
But other than that, I just used EVOO + Avacado oil once a week. And when I wanted it curky I put some mousse with frizz serum in it and let it air dry.
Now, it did thin some 2 years ago due to intense stress. Im thinking that mabye since it thicker now that its just growing back straight. Its definitly strange.

My primary doctor, once told me, stress can cause hair to fall out, i went through a period in life,,where it was thinning, then hair, went back, to normal,,thick curly(more wavy, spiral curly, than the springy curls,,you describe).
I am a believer, in stress, wreaking havoc, in all kinds of mysterious ways.
Meds, too, can do things. Have, you tried, internet searches? Sometimes, 'tis a matter of deep research, to find answers, from finding comments, in random places.
I'm going to condider, revisiting, this thread, later. My primary, quasi-dismissed the copaxone, i was on, during, that time. I'm wondering, if i was on celexa, too, then, have to backtrack my own timeline, to say, for certain...
