I went to the therapist yesterday with my husband and I'm feeling confused. I went to try and get direction on coping with my twin pregnancy and handle my depression, anxiety, and ocd. My husband went to get advice on how to cope with my illnesses. It was an hour appt and the therapist discussed several things with us. We talked about my medication and was it really necessary for me to take it. I've been on Zoloft and kolonopin for 15 years and stopped taking it within 2 weeks of learning about my pregnancy. I just started taking a small dose of zoloft again since my ob and another specialist suggested it. They also told me that I needed to do whatever it took to be in good mental health during the pregnancy, the benefits would be greater than the risks.
That is where my confusion came into play. When the therapist talked to me about learning how to manage life without medication and how this was a wonderful opportunity to rethink if I really needed medication, I got upset. I felt like I was being categorized as weak or a drug addict. I started to feel like she was telling me that for the past 15 years I was copping out and doing it the easy way. When she asked me why I never tried any other way, I told her I got help this way and didn't think I needed to try another way. I already feel so guilty that I needed to be put back on the zoloft and when she brought all these questions up to me I felt so bad. I didn't tell her how this made me feel because she was giving me and my husband good suggestions on other things. I don't understand why some dr's look at medication as a solution and others look at it as a problem. I've always been ashamed of relying on medicine but now that I'm not taking what I usually take and struggling so bad I realize how much it really helped. Should I be embarrassed? Should I feel weak? Because I do. I'm in a fragile state. I'm afraid of being a mom soon and feeling like I've made bad choices. If I made bad choices for myself how am I supposed to make good choices for these twins? I feel so unfit, unprepared and hopeless. Maybe I took her questions out of context and I'm just over analyzing everything. I have no idea. What is wrong with me? |

I can certainly understand why you would take her comments the way you did. I would have myself. I tried other ways for thirty years before I broke down and took meds. it was meds or die. so now I know there is no other choice. I would be deeply offended if a t told me that and I would have gone off on her.

Well, basically the T can go eff herself at this point.
Zoloft is a preferred drug for breastfeeding and has long been that (for at least 15 years). So you are on a drug that helps you, that does not produce much untoward action for the fetus, and that will allow you to nurse your twins. So rejoice - the situation could be much worse. Sertraline (Zoloft) use while Breastfeeding |

PS if you have such bad therapists in your area (this one does not know what therapy is, because lecturing is not therapy), maybe give up on trying to find one and instead focus on finding a good lactation consultant NOW. Below is the list I got by plugging in your location. You may not need a lactation consultant, but then you might - they say that women on Zoloft need more help with breastfeeding. At that time, you really do not want to run into a person with the worldview similar to that of the lecturing "therapist". So call everybody now that there is no urgency yet and tell them what you have told us - that you are pregnant with twins and on Zoloft - and ask if they have had experience helping new moms of twins who take Zoloft (Zoloft is such a typical SSRI that I cannot imagine that you won't find lactation consultants with relevant experience). Then based on how they sound or the location or whatever criteria seem useful for you, narrow down the list and meet these women and finally select the one you like best. Then after the birth, if you are having problems, she will be a quick phone call away - no interviews and no unpleasant surprises.

Wow, your therapist sounds horrible. I'm in the same boat as you. Stopped all meds when I got pregnant, only my therapist was very against it and thought I should stay on welbutrin which I took for depression. Months into pregnancy my depression worsened severely, and I was just put back on welbutrin by my OB who said the risk was "trivial" and that she hands out these pills for far less. She said Zoloft was a first line drug for depression in pregnancy. Not sure what your therapists problem is. I felt all those things as you and was convinced by doctors and therapists they wernt true... Id def find a new shrink, and maybe even consider reporting this one so they don't damage anyone else in the future.

Plus, if OP reports her, there would be a feeling of closure and of "doing the right thing for the sake of others" (future clients of the T), so my vote is +1 on reporting. |

You will be a fine mother. The amount you show you care by working and just doing your best will provide the tots with what they need. I don't think zoloft is the issue but the klonipin may be what the T is concerned about as it is habit forming.

Keep shopping for one you get along with. Or make it absolutely clear that you will not discuss medication with her.(him?) |
