My doctor recommended the Mirena progestin-releasing IUD to me. I have never used an IUD before, but I'm too old for the pill now. Plus, I'm a smoker (trying to quit).
I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this product. Did you have side effects? Was it effective? My sister got pregnant while she had an IUD 14 years ago, so that concerns me a bit. I got pregnant while I was on the pill, though, so maybe we're just especially fertile. I dunno. __________________ “Almost everything you do will seem insignificant, but it is important that you do it." - Mahatma Gandhi |

Hmmm, haven't used it or known anyone who has. I'm not on anything right now....I might need to start thinking about that.

Yep. You might start having to think about that Rayna.

If you're especially concerned, I'd suggest using condoms in addition, and/or a secondary form of birth control.

i have a mirena since 2003, i was supposed to have been steralised but because im overweight and my family has heart conditions the doctor refused to steralise me, but said the mirena was the next best thing, i had been using a IUD since i had my last child in 93 but my periods had become very heavy, so that is why i wanted to be steralised the mirena stops or all but stops your periods the most i see is a small discharge once a mth, i have regular check ups and he told me this one should do me up untill i start the meapouse, no side efects that i have noticed

Thanks so much for the info, Katheryn. I'm glad it's working so well for you. That's good news! I think I'm going to try it.
Good advice on the condoms, Maven. That was my plan. I'm all about safety. __________________ “Almost everything you do will seem insignificant, but it is important that you do it." - Mahatma Gandhi |

I am using it. I am 28, single mother of 1 child. I chose it because the doctor said, I can get pregnant easily if I want to. I am not very good with taking pills either. My periods actually got a lot milder, just really mild bleeding. I really like it.
