Ahh so I recently got my period and have also noticed my mood dropping. I am not sure if it is hormonal or if I am actually headed for a serious mood plunge. I am really hoping the former bc that means it should go away right? If it is period related does anyone have suggestions for making things feel like sucky and being less irritable? I am on BC not sure if that has anything to do with it either...

i can only tell you what i have heard as i have never had problems with this. my old therapist used to talk about this re: other patients he had that had this problem and said that docs prescribed antidepressants that they took when their periods were coming up to handle the mood swings. they only took them to manage their moods when cycling. i also worked with somebody who got really moody during that time and discovered if they took pamprin, the mood swings abated.

Yeah I get this sometimes too and it's menstrual related or in my case cycle related (I have the Mirena)

Warm baths .... light exercise even (just short walks) can help me.

Hope this is useful.

Yeah, I always feel so depressed, irritated, & all kinds of bad feelings when I'm having my period... Even though I'm regularly taking Seroxat (SSRI) for my OCD (which NEVER seems to have any use when my mood needs it)!!!

I go through this period slowly, step by step, trying to do what I regularly do everyday slowly, without making it hard on me, but also without giving in to just spend the whole period's period (nice word ) in bed doing nothing, 'cause I know that if I give in to this, I might end up depressed even after my period's gone (for my wasted days in bed)... (My period takes about 5:6 days)...

But also a side-note: Don't tell your mind that this is something more than just "the period's bad mood", & don't ever think that it's a depressive episode that will last beyond the period's period 'Cause our minds are very intelligent & self-conscious of our thoughts, so if you're gonna think that it's a long depressive episode, your mind will just act like it's a long depressive episode... Our minds act obediently to our thoughts, even if they're negative thoughts & we don't mean them to act accordingly!!!

Wow thanks this was really helpful! I am on lamictal but no matter what **** goes down the week before and at the beginning. SSRIs were no good for me. I guess its just something you gotta deal with ugh.

I have a big problem jumping to the worst possible outcome. thinking when things get bad they are bound to get worse so I appreciate the advice! Even my T said part of my problem wasn't getting worse but rather anxiety about the prospect of things getting worse. Trying to stay in the moment and take things as they come.

One thing I wish I'd thought about/known when I got older (I'm 65 now :-) was that the moods/problems of my 20's would be reflected in my peri-menopause in my 40's! I was pretty good in my 30's but then went back to being mildly (less so than in my 20's) depressed before my period, moody, etc. It took me quite a few years before I saw the relationship to how I'd been teens/20's.

Yes, I get slight mood swings during my period. I say slight because I'm already snappy and grumpy towards my family, but the moodiness factor, yes that's a trouble.

Than around this February, I began to sense my period coming. I would feel annoying or painful cramps days before my actual one starts... then the week long torture begins to punish me. So yeah, you fluctuate before and during your period X_X
