Oooh so following on from Rayna's SPA post ...

Last night I went to a really fantastic place called Servilles (they win a lot of awards etc), as my colleague had got the best cut of her life there ... which I thought was a good recommendation!

Anyway, I am very uninventive with my hair usually (it is long and straight and very dark). So I stayed uninventive, but it is quite gorgeous HAIR!

It is nearly black, all my icky ends are gone, still quite long, and I have a side sweepy long fringe which gets in my eyes but I think I like it.

Amazing how treats can make you feel soooo much better HAIR!

Sounds wonderful, DSF. HAIR!

I've always said, "If I would've had hair, my whole life would've been different." It's true. I was always a "white blond", but darkened with pregnancies...still blond. Alot of blonds have thinner hair, but mine is baby fine and really thin...kinda like a dog's too in that it won't grow past a certain point whether I cut it or not...lol.

I've never had a pony-tail, a layered style (except when really short), etc. I've never been able to be the carefree girl to jump out of a pool and let it go, or put on a cap, etc. Like those ppl on makeover shoes? I'd love to have a hair makeover where they could give me permanent hair. HAIR! It's bothered me my entire life...

Again, if I would've had hair, my whole life would've been different, I think. HAIR! I'm glad you do. It sounds pretty.

KD

Oh KD! You have no idea how much I used to want to be blonde!!!!!!!!

I have very fine silky hair but I have quite a lot of it (apparently). The problem with it is that unless it has some clever layering it can look a bit floppy. It has definitely felt floppy the last few months ...

Soooo much better now *me sends huge good vibes to clever hairdresser*

I cut/trim my own hair, right now I'm letting it grow so I can donate it to Locks of Love, it's about 11 inches long, and every gray hair is well earned hahaha

I wanted to donate to Locks of Love. A couple of months ago I got my hair cut from past waist-length to shoulder-length. Unfortunately, since my hair was chemically-treated (highlighted), it wasn't acceptable for Locks of Love. They only take virgin hair. It seemed like such a waste, though. My hair was still quite healthy-looking... and there was so much of it. It looked like a full-grown shih-tzu on the floor of the salon by the time the stylist was finished cutting.

Oh your hair sounds beautiful!! On a wim months ago, I put a temporary black on my hair at home and everyone loved it. My hair is naturally brown. I've since kept it black, only using a temporary on it, which a hairdresser said actually protects it, since I'm going darker, and not using permanent. Its growing out now, its to my shoulders. I've tried to have different cuts and always hate it, so now its all one length and I'm growing it long again.

My natural color is dark brown. Not the dark brown as if it looks black, but you can tell it's brown. It was always straight, but I started getting curls later on. I started dying my hair 6th grade (I know...really young now I think about it). I remember started off with a auburn color. Since then I've been doing conditioning like crazy on my hair and it looks beautiful.

I now have blonde hair. Not like how some girls they bleach their hair completely and it looks fake. I get mine done all the time by the same lady up the street who has her own salon. She's about 23. I've had the blonde since last summer just about. I just get highlights every so often.

But maybe a month and a half ago, I wanted to get quick trim and it was last minute so I couldn't make an appointment so I went to this place called 20 Minute Haircut ( I don't know if it's only in PA). There was a black gay male working there who messed up my hair really bad. My hair isn't even thick, and he said it was so he thinned it. My hair is layered so he took out huge chunks of my hair! where I had layers that were 6 inches long, some were maybe 3-4! I was so mad.

My hair is an inch past my shoulders now but I want it past my boobs since I never had it that long.

I'm fairly new in town and haven't found a hair place worth going back to twice, so last time I needed a haircut, I went to Fantastic Sam's, one of those chain places. I figured, how bad could it be?

Well, it was so bad that I had to go pay MORE money to have it fixed by a competent hairdresser. Which also made it very, very short. She said I didn't have any two places on my head that were the same length! All I asked for was to layer it up and cut the bangs. One side ended up two inches longer than the other! What a nightmare. I had big chunks cut out of mine too, so I feel your pain.

It's almost enough to make me want to let it grow! Does anybody know if hairdressers are regulated or something and you can check their licenses, like doctors?

I wish. I was so mad with the hairdresser that did my hair.

Another time, it was my sweet 16 party back in november. I paid $50 just to get my hair curled. I didn't get it trimmed or anything. Just to get it curled with a curling iron! I was so shocked! My hair was just down and curled. It ended up coming out within 1.5 hours of the party!

God I would love to go somewhere like boys can and get a slip slop slap cut for like $10!

Unfortunately, the more expensive places do not always guarantee a good cut either. There are no indicators except for others' experiences, I now believe!

I was lucky enough to have my colleague come in to work going 'this is the best cut and colour I have ever had', and Servilles is five mins walk away from work, and they could fit me in after work late night thursday.

and guess what!!!! even if i just let it dry naturally, she has cut it so it falls pretty much as it did when i left the salon. AMAZING. this never happens to me ... i shall embrace it ...!!!!!!

jess - sounds like a mad ripoff, grrrrrrrr :|

okay i'm editing this so i hope noone responds while i'm editing... anyways...

i have a lot of hair and it is kinda wavy. when it is short it is fairly wavy but when it gets longer the weight holds it down. i used to have fairly long hair then i had a bad accident and it turned into crap 'cause of the stress and the hospital stay and stuff. so i got it cut shorter and styled. kept that up a little bit but got disgruntled with bad styles (price of salon really isn't much of an indicator of how well they will cut your hair and neither is the 'senior stylist' buzz). so i grew it... and developed social anxiety and the like and just kind of let it grow for about four years without getting it trimmed (bad i know).

once i moved here i eventually got up the courage to go to the hairdresser. she was quite a ***** to me actually. because i clearly hadn't been to a hairdresser for so long. i was determined i wanted to get rid of all the split ends and get it cut straight across so i could grow it out. didn't want anybody messing up a style basically. she was a bit snotty about that. kind of incredulous that i wanted that. she was like 'it will be just touching your shoulders with all the split ends gone (snigger)' and 'are you sure you don't want me to layer it?' i managed to say... 'actually i've had so many bad cuts i'd rather you just cut it straight across actually and i'll grow it from there'. she went on a bit about the quality of the salon and i said 'actually i've had some of my worst cuts from senior stylists of very good salons'. she seemed to respond a little to my snootiness and she ended up kind of 'confessing' that my hair is a lot harder to cut then it seems because there is so much of it and because it is wavy you need some time to get to know how it sits naturally in order to layer it in a flattering way (so it holds its shape once you have left the salon).

what happened... was that after i washed it it sprung up (because the waves amplified with the lack of length). i don't blowdry my hair and so it looked unruly basically. not so hot. so... i ended up forking out for some heavy duty conditioning treatments and let it grow for about 9 months so i could get the length back. once the length was *just* okay again i went back for a trim.

and... she %#@&#! it up. she was talking to insurance assessors (getting upset about it) while an assistant was washing my hair. she turned around to me from talking to them and went 'chop'. then she trimmed the back (as i wanted) but layered it a little up towards my face. i was kind of appalled that she was doing that at the time but didn't know she was going to do that until she had already started doing it.

once i left and washed it and thought about it and looked at it properly... i realised that when she went 'chop' basically... she shouldn't have done that. she layered it at the front to try and disguise it. then blowdried it to disguise it even more. i lost that 9 months of growth at the front of my hair (which is precisely where i need the length). she %#@&#! it up, basically. $55 dollars for a 'trim' from the senior stylist at a decent salon and she can't even trim it straight across. i won't be going back there. thought about calling the salon up and getting my money back but she is a bit dramatic and i figure she is more likely to get defensive and try and justify it as a style and personally attack me for not blowdrying it or whatever. not worth it basically.

it is jolly hard to find a decent hairdresser. reputation of the person, basically. and tell them so (so they are more motivated to keep up their reputation i guess). sigh. i'm going to have to get a blowdryer over the next couple days. i HATE my hair. just want it to be inconspicuous and tidy for #%$&'s sake.

I've noticed a big problem with the more upscale places... they don't listen to you because you become their 'project.' you can tell them you want one inch trimmed, straight across, and you walk out with a haircut that you hate.

I know. There are alot of local places but only maybe a few do a good job. Well, I haven't been to all of them I'm just guessing. Luckily I know which stylist does good hair.

I hate stylist that don't talk though. It's like an awkward silence....

*crickets*

But I love my stylist, Heather. She is about 23 and graduated from the same highschool I'm at now so we talk about school, friends (since some family friends go there too), and everything. Plus I don't feel embarassed about asking her questions like, how do you do this with your hair and how much is it.

I bought a $120 hairstraightener from her for only $95. She ordered it from me, cause if I ordered it myself I would have to pay the 120. Grrr. But lucky I got $25 off!

alex I know what you mean about 'fabulous salons' thinking they can do whatever they want ... and lecturing you ...

I went to 'blo' in Wellington once which was reputed to be one of the better / more award winning ones at the time. I was a student so I didn't get my hair done all the time. Anyway the snotty bish rabbited on about how crap my hair was and oh you shouldn't put colours in yourself etc etc. Well EXCUSE me, when you are a student you sometimes have other things to spend $$ on AND you want to go red-ish for a whle or whatever. Grrrrr. She did a %#@&#! job of the cut, too. One of those emaciated all in black trying to be super freakin cool types, lesson #2 never let a heroin chic tryhard touch your hair ...

I definitely went on reputation this time and I am so happy I did. It was pricey but not toooo bad (cut and colour for under two hundred is pretty good here - think NZD tho). but I am going to go back in the recommended 7 weeks because I want to keep it looking like this - first time I am happy with my hair for ages HAIR!

Jess - good work on the straightener, salon quality is the only way to go. GHDs are great.

That's good drunksunflower!

I know I get hell for trying those box kits for dying my hair. Blah. I hated them, it's like flipping a coin.

Heads- it's the right color
Tails- ......uhhh no thanks.

But I guess they're good if you find the color you want, except they're really damaging to your hair.

Since I dye/highlight my hair, once a week usually I put Garnier Fruitice conditionior in my hair and let it soak in my hair (not dripping wet) for about 10 mins with a towel in my hair. Or a bathing cap works too. They really help restore your hair from damage. I usually enjoy a nice bath at that time and just close my eyes and relax.

But my hairdresser told me about bad shampoo's that are sold. She said there are ones that are sold that actually damage your hair even more. Some she mentioned were Tresemme and Suave I remember. She said the best is Garnier Fruictice and Head and Shoulders.

I use Garnier Fructice Long and Strong Shampoo and Conditioner. It says it's for damaged, weak, or hard-to-grow hair (which I have). I also use a leave in conditioner. Plus it smells great, and it's cheap!

I swear by Tresemme. I get huge bottles for 3 bucks. I use the combo shampoo/conditioner and then still use conditioner. My hair is so silky and shiny. I've never been consistently happy with a shampoo until I started using Tresemme.

A hairdresser told me once that Suave is mostly wax! I have really fine hair and stuff like that weighs it down bigtime. Too bad it's so cheap!
