My mom did this to me. I had just turned 12 and I got my period for the first time. I told my mom that I just got my period. She gave me a firm slap across the face. I stood there stunned mumbling "Why'd you do that?" She said she did it for good luck.
I come from a Jewish family, and as far as I know the 'mazel tov slap' is an old tradition.
Thanks for this!

I never felt ashamed about being a woman and having my period. I actually liked it. I always felt calm and horny (yes horny) when I was menstruating. Boyfriends and husband got sent shopping and bought me maxi pads. I never wore tampons because I was afraid of toxic shock syndrome and I didn't like them. It's like I was glowing with hormones and radiant when I had it. I was always sorry for women who complained and dreaded having their periods.
