Does anyone have mixed episodes when menstruating? Because for some reason, my hormones cause me to kick off in the wrong direction, and mixed episodes are the worst episodes for me. And the last one had me raging at small issues, had uncontrollable sobbing, and kept me awake for over 24 hours. I barely eat during my cycle as well.

And if you are not menstruating but had in the past, did you go through any extremes of depressive, manic, or mixed episodes?

Thank you! I am just trying to find out if others go through the same issues. And yeah I can see psychosis being a major issue while on your period.

I am usually highly depressed during menstruation and mixed right before I start. I have PMDD on top of dealing with bipolar disorder and the week before my period is hellish.

I had mixed episodes about a week prior to getting my period, every month. The agitation stopped after my period began but I'd get very emotional and clingy. The mixed episodes got so debilitating, I now take oral birth control continuously now to avoid all of it. It was either that or a hysterectomy, I couldn't handle being suicidal 5 days out of every month. So far, no more monthly crazies! I wish I had done it sooner!

Wow, sorry that you have PMDD on top of everything else. You are one strong lady!

Good to hear something worked out for you! That must be some real relief right there.

Yeah, my cramps are horrible but I found ways to cope with the pain. Sorry that you face depressive episodes.

I used to have terrible mixed episodes for about 3-4 days prior to getting my period. The agitation would stop when my period started, but then I would feel very emotional, clingy, and almost paranoid for the next couple days. I couldn't take medication for it because I'm already on psych meds. I was eating right, exercising, sleeping well, no drinking, smoking, limited caffeine... nothing worked. It became so debilitating my OB/GYN recommended that I take my oral birth control pills continuously in order to avoid the cycle completely. It was either that or I was going to ask for a hysterectomy, I could not handle feeling suicidal 3-4 days per month. It's been wonderful, no more monthly crazies! I wish I had done this years ago!

FYI - I had to do a lot of research on my own. Neither the medical nor psychiatric community know much about treating mood d/o when they're exacerbated by hormone changes. Unfortunately the only thing I found that worked was to stop my menstrual cycle.

Speak of the devil...mine started today unexpectedly. This explains why the last week has been a hot mess!

Haha, oh dear. Well, be gentle with yourself! I usually go through some major cramping, so good luck to everything!

Major cramping is an issue for me as well. Heavy bleeding, also. Yay

I am usually hypomaniac right before and very mixed during. I can adjust meds now to help with it knowing what will happen and to ease things during especially.

My main problem is mixed episodes (including obsessive thoughts, moderate to severe anxiety, and mild depression) around my period, PMS, and ovulation. I'm trying to get stabilized. Pdoc put me on a new med (Abilify) and I may start birth control next month to see if it will help even me out.

I am a total beast during ovulation. For whatever reason, that period in my cycle is the worst in terms of mood.

I usually go through a slight depression before my period. Before I was medicated I would go through horrible mixed episodes for about a week before my period. I was diagnosed with pmdd. But I think a lot of it was bp.

Now I'm on Invega and I don't have my period anymore. It can cause infertility, but I don't want anymore children so I'm fine with it.

Well, no one should be forced to go through anything they do not want (i.e periods and childbirth). Right now I am going through my first day, and man, the pain is awful. But without my new medication, I think I would be a mess right now mentally.

Yup, mixed. Best day of my life was when I stared menopause! The BP is so much easier to deal with.
