Decicing to go gray

I'm 49 and while not completely gray, I do have a significant amount of gray, particularly around the temples. I've been getting my hair coloured for at least the last 10 years.

But I'm now on disability and can't afford to shell out 115 every 2-3 months, so I've decided that for now, I'm going to let my natural gray grow in. I know it's going to be an awkward process to grow my hair out until the dyed hair is fully gone, but I'm not too concerned about it. I'm not job hunting at the moment, so I don't have to worry about looking good for interviews. If I start job hunting, I may revisit the decision.

I'm wondering when other women decided to stop colouring and just go with the gray..

I'm not gray yet, but I've never dyed my hair and don't really want to spend the time or money. So when I go gray, I'm going to embrace it.

My original color was dishwater blonde. I dyed it most of my younger years (going on 60 here), red or light blonde. About five years ago I decided to let it go natural, as it was noticably grey, not just the occasional hair. I do love it but sometimes I think about dying it again, but then I'd have to go thru the touching up and growing out process, etc. Can't say I won't dye again but don't plan to. I think gray/silver/white hair is beautiful. Definitely like it better than my original color.

I think if youre gonna go gray, the main thing then is to have a rockin' hairstyle. Whatever that means to you.

I have never dyed my hair and it's not something I would do.

I dyed my hair a few times when I was in my fifties. Now that I'm older (63), I just go natural. People tell me they like my silver/grey hair.

I dyed my hair grey 2 years ago. How's that for a twist?

I'm still in my mid 30s. The grey hairs have started coming in but only here and there. My hair is currently rainbow colored. I love the wild stuff. So it's hard to say which way I will go. I think grey hair is beautiful to be honest. I could see myself rocking it.

I let my hair go grey because I got tired of spending time and money on salons. Also it always itches like crazy when I got my hair colored. Stylists can actually help you transition to grey. I got lowlights instead of highlights every few months through the growing out process so there was never that sharp line of color and grey roots. I love my silver hair now.

I’ve been all gray/silver since about my early 40’s. I have never dyed my hair...could never see the time/money investment as worth it. I actually get a lot of compliments on my hair color.

While I never thought that I would have a problem with going gray, now that it's happening, I find myself resisting. I have plucked more than a couple of long curly grays in the past couple of years. I don't want to ~ but my resistance doesn't last very long.

I even tried some type of hair color set (at home), but that didn't work at all. Those grays are a lot thicker than regular, aren't they? I'm with you sis'.

I've been grey since I was in my late-20's. Always dyed it, every color (I mean every!) except black. In my 50's the grey turned white and it just does not hold home dye at all. So I'm transitioning by getting highlights or lowlights along the way. Yes, they are expensive and that's a problem for me. So I don't have the color done more than 2 or 3 times per year. Now it's a nice, soft light-blonde with white and some grey in it.

Decided to just go natural a couple years ago when my hairdresser left because I wouldn't trust anyone else. It's about 1/3 Gray right now. The rest a not great brown. I always think 80 year olds with colored hair look ridiculous.

Maybe you can have a stylist work in a warm brown with your gray?

There seems to be a trend around where I live that people are dying there hair an ash color and I don't mean ash blonde..... it's just ash. To each there own but we all get there at some point..... why rush the process?

Here too. I predict these are the same folks who will be plucking when they find real gray hairs later. lol
