I am getting a Mirena IUD on Friday for heavy periods. Anything I should know. I have done research but I would like to hear from women who actually have one.

I was told that a Mirena would be the normal route for my heavy bleeding but due to a number of factors I was steered in the direction of taking progesterone orally. The GYN said that it's like taking the Mirena orally. Doing it this way it avoids the need for an insertion and subsequent removal if it didn't help. I have been taking this pill for the last four days and my heavy bleeding has stopped.
![]() Having the IUD would mean that you wouldn't need to think about taking the pills each day. If it works as well as the oral progesterone then go for it. It's so nice not to be at the mercy of the bleeding. |

I had one and my experience wasn't so good. Please don't be scared but just keep this in mind if you have issues. I share it because it wasn't out there when I needed it.
Basically I got it for heavy bleeding and it made my bipolar go wild. I had it for nine months and was suicidal and moods were everywhere the whole time. Finally we decided to pull it and that it was better to put it back if needed than to run the risk that it was causing the problems. Out it came (out is really easy btw; I was having another procedure under anesthesia when it was inserted so I know nothing about that) and I improved almost immediately. I did have even heavier bleeding and a hysterectomy after that (so glad for the surgery) but the mood thing surprised everyone. Yet within a few weeks my pdoc and gyn both found other women with mood disorders made worse by Mirena, something neither had knowledge of before me. So it is rare but just know that if you have more mood issues you should discuss the possibility of an issue with your doctor.

My doctor couldn't insert it, my muscles were too strong and kept pushing out the speculum. Being sent to a GYN to have it done.

Mirena took away my period for 3.5 years. Then it failed HAHAHA
I'm the first IUD failure in my OB doctors career. It's a rare thing though- it should work awesome for you.

At 49 I'm not too worried about failure, that and even with fertility drugs I was only given 6% chance of becoming pregnant.

IUD has always sounded like an elite college to me. I'd love to say, "I have a Ph.D from IUD."

I have the Mirena and it works great. I don't have very many periods, but I do get stress cramps which suck. But not nearly as painful as without it. I spoke with my OBGYN and she said it now lasts for seven years instead of five. Good plus to it.

Finally got it inserted today. A bit painful but just for a few seconds, now I just feel tender.
