I want to be a police officer or join the army. Everybody seems to give me hard time about this because I am a woman. They tell me it's to difficult and involves suppressing emotions, such as sympathy and compassion. Personally I think these types of fields could benefit from the woman's touch...what'd ya'll think?

I think you should choose the career you want, based on your interests, passion, and aptitude, not on what other people think. Perhaps you could get in contact a female police officer or army officer and chat with them about their experience and get some good advice and mentoring from them. Good luck!

Men hold really strong opinions about women in the military - opinions that really wouldn't occur to most women. If you want a balanced perspective, you should ask this question in a gender-unspecific forum.

I have two brothers and an ex who were military men. I could develop an endless list of reasons why the military would benefit from more women, and they'd be able to come up with a list just as long of reasons why women would be detrimental; many of the reasons were a big surprise to me.

police officers is a total 180 from the military. as an officer you have chance for promotion without total humiliation first. military you need to be ready for round the clock harassment (including sexual harassment), holding back from saying anything about it because if you do you are seen as a trouble maker and will not advance. you need to be prepared for hazing which often includes violence and sometimes raping female military officers.

find yourself someone who was in the military and ask them. if you dont mind being told what to do and how to do it every single day; and if you dont mind being sexually harassed and raped; and if you dont mind taking twice as long to move up the ranks as men: go for it. but if any of those things bother you, think twice. a lot of people think women have won our equality but thats not true, especially not in the military.
