Ladies, I need tips. How does one stop the bleeding on a lengthy cut?
Actually, what it is, is a SCRAPE -- really, it wouldn't be a problem on a normal person, not really any worse than a paper cut. I, unfortunately, am on blood thinners, and so even paper cuts bleed horribly. It goes down a goodly part of the back of my calf, so there's no chance I have enough bandaids to cover it. I have an Ace bandage on it, but that's starting to bleed through. (Not all the way, just a bit, and it seems to be contained, but still visible.) Ideas? Suggestions? Helpful hints? I'll be darned if I'm going to the ER for a stupid SCRAPE!

Apply pressure (particularly to your artery if you can, but if not, at least to the cut) & see if that helps. Elevate your leg above your heart.

  Angela, those were some mighty interesting ideas on that one site, LOL. I am going to go check and see if it's reasonably stopped now. If not, I guess I'll try some of those tips! Thanks, both of you.

BAH -- it started right back up as soon as I took the Ace bandage off!
I'm going to bed. The chances of dying from blood loss from a scrape are minimal.

I have one of those styptic pencils, which are effective but they hurt like a mf. I've done that kind of scrape - right on my ankle bone. I think I was 14 years old and I still have the scar 24 years later. Ick.

I just got my legs waxed today, btw. I think I've permanently given up on shaving. If a day comes when I can't afford to get waxed, then I'm giving it up altogether and will live with hairy legs. I don't feel like dealing with the maintenance.

Lots of pressure on the area. Go to walgreens and get some gauze and some Coban. Thats the stuff they use at blood draws, you can get it at the pharmacy too. It sticks to itself and creates a good pressure wrap. You can try that NuSkin too, the liquid bandage.

I found the box of huge bandaids from when I cut my foot recently and hope that will be the end of it. When I took the Ace bandage off this morning, it immediately started bleeding again!

LOL I guess there really IS a website for everything!
I found some oversize bandaids from when I cut my foot. I'll take them off when I get home tonight and see if it's stopped. If not, then I guess it's a trip to urgent care. Bah. |

I would definately go to the ER if it doesn't stop on blood thinners. I have a scar running the length of my shin from the first time I shaved my legs (double headed razor, anyone remember them?)
I think the problem you're having is that when you pull the bandage off, your damaging the skin. There is a product out there called second skin or new skin (one is for burns and it's awesome, not that one). This you paint on, it smells like nail polish, and BURNS LIKE HELL. But it will give you protection and you do not have to worry about changing the bandage. Another thought is to put Neosporen (sp) on the wound so that it does not stick to the bandage, and you pull the "scab" off every time you change the bandage. Be careful of that area in the future. I cut my leg 25 years ago and if I hit is with a razor just right again, it bleeds like a stuck pig. At the time, my best friend was VERY helpful, brought me her dad's shaving stick, burned like hell but it stopped the bleeding. __________________ I've been married for 24 years and have four wonderful children. |

Well, I had a lovely trip to the urgent care walk-in clinic. They put some stuff on it that is treated with something that will help it clot. You were right that when I took the Ace bandage off, it just reopened the wound, but I slapped on giganto bandaids and it bled even worse throughout the day.

I'm so glad you went to the urgent care. When was the last time you had your protime? It was just recently right? I would let your doctor know about this bleeding....might need some adjusting. Have you had any changes in your leafy greens intake? The amount of K in foods can change the density of blood as well, but they've probably told you that? Anyway, I just worry about all that bleeding....makes me wonder if the amount of blood thinners is at a good level.

((((((((Rayna))))))) I just had my protime done last week. This clinic likes to keep people with my particular clotting disorder between 2.5 - 3.5, and I was at 3.3. I was surprised they didn't check it again at the urgent care. I will call my nurse and mention it, though.

Yeah, they put something on it at urgent care that they said would help it clot. Dr. told me to keep it on for 24 hours, which is now over, but I haven't checked it yet. There's no blood coming through the bandages, so I'm hopeful!
Personally, I *HATE* having my INR that high....the chance of a bleed worries me more than the chance of a clot. (I've already survived 4 of them, after all!) |

Yeah that would scare me too. It must be different then my patients, who are on blood thinners for afib and arrythmia, we like to keep them between 1.0 and 2.0 though sometimes the doc checks off and doesn't change meds even when they're above 2.0.

Wow, that's low. It's my understanding that a level of 1.0 is equivalent to not even taking blood thinners! But I'm just a patient, not a medical expert, so I'm probably wrong!
I was dx'd at Mayo and they kept me between 2 and 3. Actually, so did my hemo here, till he handed me off to the coag clinic for routine management. I'm not nuts about the 2.5 - 3.5 stuff! |

The requirements must be different for people taking blood thinners for heart related stuff, like my patients. This has been interesting to talk about lol!
